Intake preference

Just wondering what intakes are preferred and some of the pros and cons of each from members who have bought them.

I'm think that I would go with the AEM CAI...

The comptech icebox gives more hp gains though, with a more stock look and less sound. But I think I would prefer giving up a little hp for some more sound. Also how are the fujita and injen.

Also kinda newb question, but how do you take out the stock shiftknob when changing it out. And does converting the leds in the car to blue leds need soldering?

The AEM is REALLY loud, it hisses like crazy on cold startup and you can hear it everytime you press on the gas. Sometimes I wish I got the comptech, there are fitment issues if you have a TL-S with fog lights but I see you have a TL-P in your signature so you should be fine with an AEM, get the 416.

If you put a K&N filter on your CT Icebox, the sound is a little louder than it is with the crappy foam filter CT includes.

FUJITA doesn't offer an intake for the 2nd gen CL/TL. Your options are either AEM or Injen for a tubular CAI and Comptech for a cold air box. All are great intakes; it just depends on what you're looking for.

AEM and Injen - loud at WOT and especially when VTEC engages, polished finished, tubular

Comptech - subtle, throaty, most HP

Is there a significant change in the hp gains for the comptech icebox? I remember there was talk of minor gains of the aem v2 compared to the aem cai. I really like the polished tubular look, cuz I'm thinking of getting engine covers painted and stuff.

Is the noise on the aem a lot louder compared to the icebox? Any clips?

I've heard that the Comptech Icebox sounds like the stock intake with the resonator removed. I may be wrong, but if I'm right then the sound difference is pretty big.

All I can tell you is that the AEM V2 is probably the loudest intake you can get, if it isn't I would be shocked. I went from riding in peace and quite even under moderate acceleration to a very loud sound especially when the vtec kicks in.

This is what the stock intake sounds without the resonator (I have an exhaust in this video too):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUYg8WjTRkE

I guess thats almost what a comptech icebox sounds like, but it does not give the same gains obviously.

I have the AEM V2 and love the sound. Honestly, you can only hear it under hard acceleration/WOT or when in vtec. When in idle, you can hear slight resonance from the outside of the car because of the way our engine breathes, but you cannot hear this sound in the cabin. I believe its almost the same with all CAI.

Video of I/H/E (You could mostly hear the V2 doin its thing):

Ohh yea I really think that this exhaust is the best bang for the buck.. can't beat a $480 dollar known brand exhaust. At all the carshows I went to, most people confuse it with the comptech exhaust. They look almost identical. I thank you for pointing me in the right direction when I got this exhaust

I like my AEM V2 but it's not available polished, only titanium powder coat. It is loud but I don't think it's bad and I thought I was pretty conservative. As I passed a colleague in the parking lot at work (5 mph max.), he gave me a dirty look and put his hand over his ear. That's when I realized that maybe it is loud. I drive with my windows up anyway so I'm not bothered.

I think ima go for the aem cai. Loud but not too loud and cheapest. That magnaflow exhaust, where did you find it pizaul? I kind of gave up looking for an exhaust cause I thought it would run about 800 new and can't find any used.

I got it from performancepeddler.com when they had some kind of promition going on. I think you can now get it for around 600. Its made for the V6 Accord so its a custom job. Just need a 4" extension. I think you can get it on ebay for cheaper too. Look for Magnaflow 15640 on ebay.

I'm going with the Comptech Icebox, for the quality, fitment, performance. I also would hate if I hydrolocked my motor for an extra 2hp.

I had the Icebox on my 05 RSX-S and it sounded/performed wonderfully. Install was cake and fitment was perfect.

I dunno why so many people say the "loud noise" from a CAI like AEM or Injen is annoying...its not loud at all. Yes it does hiss when you start up the car, for about 15 seconds, and then for about 15 more seconds when you push on the gas you hear that cool whoosh of the air being sucked into the intake, definitley not annoying...

Cold air intakes sound stock under normal driving but once you floor it ur TL will sound like its got a V8 when VTEC hits...

also, alot of ppl think Short Ram intakes are SO MUCH louder than a CAI...i had an AEM CAI but had to cut it into a short ram b/c of a big hole towards the bottom of the pipe; the only sound difference is that the short ram is SLIGHTLY deeper and louder, nothing major.

If you want to stay as stock looking and sounding as possible, go with an icebox...if you want ur engine to look prettier, shinier, and sound wonderful, go with a CAI...powerwise the icebox is supposed to be better throughout the whole powerband while the CAI dominates in higher rpms...really, the hp difference is negligible...

BOTTOM LINE: go with CAI, you'll orgasm when u hear ur car in vtec with it

^Well said.

For some reason I can't justify paying $200 for a box of plastic, and then replace the foam filter that comes with it too.. Maybe its just me. I got my V2 new for $180 and am happier than ever. The cool thing is after a drive, I pop the hood and touch the intake manifold and feel thats its fairl cold along with the CAI pipe.

FYI - the Comptech Icebox IS a Cold Air Intake (CAI), just a different brand than Injen and AEM.

Just look around the Black Market. Every so often a good deal comes up.

For instance, I got a brand new Icebox for the TL-S for only $185 shipped!

Eh where'd you get that from? I could only find it for $300 or more. I can't find anything on the black market. Usually they're not for 99-00 tl-p :\.

the term "Cold Air Intake" has come to be associated mainly with long intake pipes that put the filter away from the engine to draw in cold air from outside...

yes the Comptech Icebox is a cold air intake because it feeds cold air into the engine, hence the icebox, but that gives it its own distinction...the main issue here is, the Icebox sounds more like just having stock intake with the resonator removed, yes it still sounds nice, but not as awesome as having a CAI at wot in Vtec
