intake performance questions

my friend who goes toUTI is telling me my injen intake gives me less HP and worse gas mileage. his argument is that an oil charged filter is harder to suck air through. for example put a towel over your mouth and try to breath through it. you still can. second now wet the towel and try to breath through it. nearly impossible. so hes stating my intake with the 3inch filter that has oil covering it is making my engine work harder to breath. also where is our mass air flow sensor. by the intake. is it deleted when we put on an aftermarket intake. this is important because if it is then nothing is adjusting the fuel to air ratio when air comes in the intake. and the car runs at a constant rate all the time???? correct. i am aware there is somthing where its kinda like a mass air flow but connected to like springs. hes also trying to tell me i wont get any gains from headers.

I guess UTI isn't all its cracked up to be....There is dyno proven results on both the intake and headers....

our cars dont have a MAF.

so a straight tube, with oiled filter is less restrictive than the maze of tubes air has to go through in the stock setup???

headers don't make power?!?!?

you're friend needs to find a new line of work...

i went to uti. so not everyone is a retard that goes their. but most of the ppl that go their just dont give a fuck and always sleeping. now the problem with maf sensor is that on some cars (mostly mustang, the older 5.slows) the oil fucks with the sensor. and ur friend is a retard

try breathing through a straw. then a straw it many bends to it and a small opening. which is easier?

i went to lincoln and i was learning that the emissions did a study on air filters and a dirty filter gets more mpg than a clean one but i complete dirty filter loses mpg. but this only applys to fuel injected cars because the computer confensates fuel for the less air from a dirty filter so you lose hp. and with a new air filter theres no restriction with air going in so the car gives it more fuel so you get more hp and less mpg.

also an oiled filter will filter better than a non oil filter.

The others are correct, your friend needs to pay attention better in class.

Yes we gain power from intakes, even oiled filters. Yes we gain power from headers. Quite a bit actually. We DONT have MAF's. We have a MAP in the manifold.

they didnt make a GLI in 98, only a GTI...

stock VR's are slow unless swapped to a mk2 or mk3 with mods.

I wouldn't say there is a 'maze of tubes' in a stock setup, unless you are referring to the intake resonator. Once that is removed, it is a very straight shot.

Amsoil sells filters for air-induction intake systems, and they don't use oil wetted gauze. http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/eaau.aspx

I'm sure UTI is impressed with their students retention of knowledge.
That's kind of embarrassing

Yes, that is the stock setup which is restrictive and draws in warmer engine temp air, has multiple resonators, and has ribbed rubber which isnt exactly a smooth path for air, nor is it round, something else that isnt smooth for air.

I bet you he has an intake on his GTi. The stock intake setup was designed to be quiet, filter well and be impervious to the elements. And it's very good at that. Unfourtunatley we'd trade much of that for power and some aural bliss.

Got my AEM intake in the mail yesterday, installing today, will let you know if I notice any performance effect. I will be able to tell because I am usually neck and neck with my buddies modded GSR, so we will see.

Are AEMs known to make your motor shake violently or something?
