how important is a new pulley/tentioner when replacing the timing belt/water pump
have a 99 tl and im not sure if i should replace pulley when replacing timimg belt/water pump. it has 186k and still runs strong.

For the cheap insurance that its food, id replace the tensioner.

it is an integral part of your timing belt system. It is a moving part and wears out over time. It is much, much easier to replace it while you are in there already. Same goes for the water pump.
and if your $70 tensioner breaks, your engine breaks....bye-bye.
Are there not 2 of them in there. I replaced both on my J30A1 on my timing belt change.

I replaced everything, the pulley, tensioner, & UR undersize crank pully with new Gatorback belts when I did my water pump and timing belt. Better safe than sorry, certainly if you have to pay for the labor twice.
