You have many choices...

Mod 1 - Mid muffler removal

Mod 2 - Mid muffler and resonator removal

Mod 3 - Unbolt rear mufflers

Mod 4 - Mid muffler and resonator and rear muffler removal (straight pipes)

Mod 5 - Headers (DC, OBX, Comptech) and aftermarket exhaust (Tsudo, Tanabe, ATLP, Magnaflow, Borla, etc)

Mod 6 - custom fit an Eisenmann exhaust

there are probably several other options that i forgot, but if you just use the search function and explore the site a little more you can find numerous exhaust ideas.

All good options posted above. I must say, you will not see significant gains from any exhaust mod (minus headers of course), because the TL's (at least the TL-S) exhaust is quite free-flowing to begin with. The only reason a number of members swap on cat-back exhausts are axle-back exhaust setups is for looks and sound. If you do either of the aforementioned options, you will most likely experience droning at 2k rpms while cruising. Comptech's expensive cat-back is the quietest apparently, but you pay for it.

by all means, go for it. itll cost you though.

labor and pipe= 250-350?
dual HFC's = 500 or so?
dual resonators = 200 (optional)
dual mufflers = 300 or so
custom headers and down pipes = 400 maybe at the least

could add an X pipe or H pipe as well like some muscle cars have.

and even if you are able to knock $100 off of all those estimates above, its still quite a bit. itll add up pretty quickly. but hey, if you have the funds, go for it and show it off

well if you look at the tl exhaust it is not a true dual it is a single pipe that y's at the end so im going to turn it into a true dual but also at the start of the exhaust it has a couple of bends that it does not need here is a pic of a third gen tl this is the bend im talking about it is the bend at the top kinda looks like a cane thats the bend i want to get rid of

the purpose of the j-pipe is to act as a collector. it takes the outlet from each header on each side of the engine and joins them creating one outlet which goes to the cat.

heres a picture of Comptech headers for the 99-03 TL:

my issues with straight pipes are drone, rasp, and rice. also for me, my TL is my daily driver so i need to pass emissions. so no cats = no bueno. trust me, i have straight pipes from the resonator back and the drone is unbelievable. i cant wait to get my exhaust done properly in the spring.

are you going to daily drive this car? or is it a track car?

i plan on driving the car everyday i dont want to have it straight pipe it is going to have stock muffs it will just be a true dual

in the pic the header on the right has the pipe that comes down and turns left into the other pipe what i want to do is instead of the pipe coming down and turning towards the engine and then left it will come down and turn away from the engine and have its own pipe does that make sense lol

right. i know what you mean. you wouldnt be the first member here to get it done. i believe fsttyms1 has true duals or something along those lines.

how are you going to fit 2 cats? is there enough clearance? or are you going catless?

no cats = emissions FAIL (btw)

2 cats means ecu troubles n such.

v.6.p. has seen a couple people do it (the forum) but it isn't something that will give you much benefit unless high compression or boosted. even then i would still run a single pipe just because of the added weight and the headache a dual would be...

kris could u chime in? i did find this in your engine build thread tho...

i don't kno the specifics but if your ecu is programed to run with 1 cat, then you add another, it has to run based off 2. im guessing you would need sum sorta harness or sumthing to trick it. I haven't looked into it that much since it's not really on my to-do list.
