Exhaust Cut-Outs?

my friend is looking to keep his quiet idle that the stock mufflers provide, but he aslo wants a ballsy car, so we're thinking exhaust cut out mod. anyone have one on their TL's or know anything about the pros and cons of having one? ive heard that theres less power on the bottom end since theres no back pressure, but what if you mounted it closer to the rear of the car after the resonator? any thoughts guys?

I have that on my camaro with alot engine mod. (Ran 10.8@121mph)
I don't think it going to sounds good on the TL.
Because the Tl has 6 cylinder.
Maybe it will sound ok if you have engine mod, like different cam and heads.
Even the V8 sound kind off funny if you don't have engine mod.(I have a friend with cutout on his camaro without any engine mod)

I was going to do this a while back, but there isn't really room for it if you mount it somewhere beneficial. Your gonna have to move the catalytic converter back about a foot and weld it in, otherwise not really any power gains if you mount it after the cat. If you are lowered it will hang down a lot as well.

Basically an electric door that when closed, uses the stock exhaust, but when open, dumps the exhaust wherever you put it. (no exhaust) I wouldn't do this on a TL.

doesnt have to be eletronic... theres manual ones that are operated by a wire as well as the type w/ screw on covers. the last option is for drag cars only since u have to phyiscally get out of the car to remove the covers.

its a great upgrade for a forced induction car since it allows maximum airflow. i have them on my audi and its fun as hell to have a nice quiet car till a punk in a Focus decides to mess with me. flip a switch and it sounds like a Chevelle lol... so much fun

im doing this in 1 month or so...im gona b putting my MR headers bak in...moving the cat 10 inches bak...xtending the o2 sensor...e-cutout is gona b after the headers...tuned w/apexi neo for opened n closed

ull loose torque if u have it open from the start...it should open up at high revs...

ive looked into having it open according to vtec...

tied to vtec electronically:
it takes the flap 2 seconds to fully open n 2 seconds to close...
so vtec engauges past 3500 rpms...from 3500 to redline takes like 3 seconds...which means it wouldnt even open until the next gear...n by that time ull b off vtec...with the flap open...n since its off...itll close but then ull already b in vtec...

CoNfLiCt
n
POINTLESS

tied to vtec by wire:
retarded idea...n not worth the $$$

best is to engauge it at the beginning of 3rd gear...

ur rite...it wont sound good unless ur modded...n itll only sound good at high revs...

ive heard a stock maxima with it...n ive heard a stock g35 with it...
maxima was a 3.0L n g35 is 3.5L
both v6s
youtube it up...n ull know what im talking bout it sounding like ass at low revs...

my assumption is that with engine mods n vtec kicking in...itll sounds pretty good...
bare in mind...maximas n g35s dont have vtec...

the only engine mod i dont have is a S/C...which i almost had my hands on...but lost it

So what if you're not looking for power considering you could only gain like 5hp from even proper placement where in the pipe would it sound the best? I also checked my pipe no resonator.. So after the midmuffler i'd assume it's fairly similar to a G35?

I've been tricked by some of these ancient thread revivals recently, how many trans threads do we need?

This mods best suited for big engines or turbo/supercharged. On a N/A engine imagine your exhaust like straw drinking milk. If the straw is too small or too big its going to be hard to draw the milk out of the glass. The perfect sized straw would give the best results, same as your engine and this size varies from engine to engine.

On a turbo car the turbo creates back pressure for the engine and dumping exhaust from the turbo to the atmosphere or threw a short down pipe would give the best results for power.

My father in laws built C6 Z06 even dynoed higher with the dump being closed. It sounds awesome with it open (on a 9 second V8) but thats about it.

Not going to gain any power unless you are F/I.

Right but I wouldn't be expecting any power even with a full exhaust system I'm just looking for sound.

hehehe...which i am now(come a loooong way since '07)...but im too low to run a cut out...

besides its only useful if its dumped before the cat...and before the cat is the down pipe...ive tried to find ways to have it dump out on the down pipe and that severely hinders the flexibility of the down pipe since the only place to put it is where the flexpipe is...by cutting out the flexpipe and putting the y pipe there...

did that make sense? lol
