Question Dumb J32A identity question

We're Mazda guys who've been handed a project that involves a J32A swap. We've been given two junkyard donor motors. Is there a quick and dirty way to determine if these are J32A1 or J32A2?

Also, is there a good source for the front water jacket plugs that are under the cam gear/belt cover? Or does anyone know what that thread size/pitch is?

Thanks for the help!

there should be an engine name plate that displays the version

I also moved the thread into the proper subsection, as this involves the 2nd generation TL and you'll get more hits

All we can find is a stamp in the block that says "J32A". My limited research indicates that the differences between the A1 and the A2 are all in the heads/pistons?

Into an Exocet, actually. Exomotive - US Manufacturer of Exocars & Kit Cars | Exocet this is a kit that basically involves lifting the unibody off the Miata driveline/suspension and dropping on a tube frame (and losing about 900 lbs in the process). We're using this kit JV6 Miata Package SuperFastMi to marry the two to build an endurance racer. Should shake out to about 1600lbs. We're hoping to keep the motors virtually stock (for reliability) but with a MegaSquirt system, headers, etc to make about 300hp.

you might could tell the difference from a a1 and a a2 from the intake manifold, the a2 has bigger intake runners than a a1. post some pics of the motor, and ill see if I can do the same if I notice a difference in the intakes you post verses what I have.

If you have the engine covers the A2 has red lettering "3.2 VTEC" and the A1 is white. Also the intake manifold top plate if very flat on the A1.

A1

A2

My '02 TL-S says J32A2. Also FYI the A2 has the IMRC controller attached to the intake.
