Question Driving in 4th Gear

I read somewhere online that driving on 4th gear as a pose to 5th,in the city, will actually give you better gas mileage. I've tried driving in 4th gear but haven't notice anything different gas wise. Does anyone else notice a difference??

How would driving in a lower gear that will keep the rpms up higher help your gas mileage?

it was for STOP and GO traffic, when you are driving the gears change at/around 45 mph so instead of it going back and forth btw 4 and 5 gear you just slap it into 4th and it wont try to change at 45mph

i drive like that, keeping it in 4th all the time if im under 50mph, cant really tell if i get better gas mileage but the reason i do it is to save some wear and tear on the transmission from shifting back and forth between 4th and 5th all the time

well as long as you don't floor it every chance you get and drive with ease then you will get better mileage. These cars are very heavy so city wise I wouldn't really expect anything over like 20 mpg if your lucky

i keep it in D5 at most times..i read that the slap stick can damage our trannys and being that they are sensitive as it is, shifting it in between d4 and d5 is a lil nerv racking..haha ill drop it into d4 only when needed like up steep hills and such

I drive in 4th around the city and put it in 5th for the highway.

5th in the city = too much changing gears. If I have a sacrifice a few mpg to *potentially* prevent/save wear and tear on the transmission + better driveability, I will.

one thing to remember in SS is to not shift to a higher gear too soon. this causes excessive wear on the clutchpacks in the tranny

i love SS.. i keep it in 3rd for side streets and backroads, 4th for town roads with 40mph speed limits.. 5th only 60+mph on highways.. 3rd is my favorite gear because it pulls so nice at mid - high rpm's

Yeah, I get about 200-215 miles per full tank to empty in the city. It kinda sucks having 91 octane required, but it does haul some ass!

hmm thats interesting, so trying to keep the rpms as low as possible will hurt the tranny is what ur saying. i used to do that all the time, now i need a new tranny
