Corvette power train in a 3g TL

Hopefully I have your attention. What I have realized is that we all want more power. A 350hp and a 3100 pound chassis would not be bad but currently it is impossible given for on the fragility of the engine and that piece of crap transmission. What I propose is to go a powertrain swap with the 6 liter corvette power train. If one wanted to build a performance engine, it is possible since all the performance aftermarket parts cater to GM systems. I don't have the time or resources currently to do it. But I definately will consider it when my tl's powertrain is at its end but the rest of the car is still tight.

it will never fit without extensive chassis and body modifications. unless you are a master auto body mechanic with precision tools the cost would outweigh the gain. you could buy a vette cheaper.

i think i might have to second sbuswell on this one. i don't know if it would necessarily stack up higher than the cost of a new corvette, but it wouldn't be very cheap at all. bottom line though is that anything can be done, given you have time and money.

just think of what the first guy thought when he dropped a northstar v8 into a fiero.

uh, while the tranny certainly had it's issues the engine is far from fragile. The good news is if you're waiting for the engine to die you'll have a lot of time to save up for a vette engine and the related costs.

Id bet big money it would fit just fine as long as you kept it front wheel drive. but who would want to do that

the motor on the TL is not by any means fragile. It will handle lots of power. Just check out the 3rd gen areas and 2nd gen CL and see. We even have a member shooting for well over 400 with a turbo project.

Remember there's a crapload more to consider than just the drivetrain for this swap to work; you're going to have to re-engineer the whole car. It would probably be a lot easier to weld up a tube chassis and hang all the TL sheetmetal on it (of course it wouldn't be street legal then).

yea if you make it rwd, if you were to keep it fwd not much would have to be done.
Ive seen a GM northstar in a VW golf so i know a V8 would fit in the front of the TL.

Yeah, you can wedge a NS V8 into a FWD car if you cut out enough of the unibody and then properly reinforce it. Remember, he wants to use a Corvette driveline. There isn't a transaxle that'll bolt up to that LS1 (or 2 or 7 or whatever).

I bet you wouldnt have to cut any thing out. The engine bay on our cars is huge! Now to make it rwd, thats a different story. There isnt nearly enough room down the middle for a rwd trans and shaft without serious modification

One word....why...I'm all for power but why do it in a fwd car? Why not a G35 rwd... then again, with all the turbo kits for a G why do the swap at all...

If only we had a better tranny...rwd....and tuning for turbos......the TL would be near perfect...

Because it's not my TL, my money, or my time, I say go for it!

I always like to see these projects.

Although by using the L37 Northstar and keeping it FWD, it would be alot easier. Almost 300 ponies and 300 pounders!

Me wishes you would have done it. But then would a manual be able to be bolted up to it too? hmm...

Heck, why don't you just drop a 572 Chevy big block with a 4-71 blower on it in the TL engine compartment. Better yet, drop the 572 on a separate frame and just drop the TL body on top if it.

If you want to get Corvette power in a 4 door sedan, go out and get a caddy CTS-V with the 400hp LS series motor.

It does weigh more than a TL, but is RWD, has a manual trans, bigger tires, better brakes, and more agressive chassis. You can pump it up to 500hp easy and still get 25mpg on the highway.
