blacking out headlights.
blacking out headlights.
Does anybody provide this service that has a spare pair for 03 tl? I saw a couple people that do it, but it was for the 3g. its my dd so can't afford to have it down. Thanks
haha, yea, that was me when i was so eager to do this mod.
i just manned up, pulled the lights of my car and got to work.
once i started opening one up, there was no turning back. haha.

^ you could always search around on ebay($150-$250 for a set, i bought mine separately for $200 for both), get a spare set of headlights and use those to work on so you don't have any downtime on your car. This way you can take your time with the headlights to make each detail perfect.
then keep the stock headlights just in case the ones you worked on leaks.

Yep its probably what i'll do. especially after seeing your car. (looks very clean). Mines a nbp with oem lip kit too and those headlights just make a difference in my opinion. Thanks for your insight.

I've read that some people use duplicolor or rust oleum. The one you have above says metal, wood, wicker not sure if that is your best option. Plus duplicolor sells high build primer so it may hide imperfections better. Not a pro just letting you know what i have read on here.
III.II. - I used the EXACT same primer and paint. It came out great! Make sure you tape the chrome on the inside of the corners because that is where your bulb will reflect light. I kinda forgot to do that for mine but its not a big issue.

I used Krylon Fusion flat black paint. I just like that more so than the gloss black.
jterrorc, the smaller the grit number, the rougher it is (150 is rougher than 400, and 400 is rougher than 600, etc). It's faster to use rougher sand papers first to sand off the chrome first, then you make the surface smoother by using finer sand papers (1000, 1500 grit).

I used painters tape to tape off some parts and the chrome peeled off.
Just be really careful when taping off the reflective parts and try to gently put the tape on. Luckily I tested it before I put it on the reflective part.

^rougher sand paper gets the chrome off quicker and easier(or any painted surface) then the finer sandpaper smooths it.(finer scratches) so when you paint there won't be big gouges. With the rougher sand paper the primer or paint won't hide rougher scratches.
after i blacked mine out i sealed them up real well, and they don't leak in the rain at all. but every time i drive when its below freezing outside they fog up and condensate. i aired them out one day with really dry air and still no luck. does anyone have this problem? im guessing humid air is trapped in them?

when I had a bad seal before, they didn't leak in the rain. They only leaked when I went to wash my car. So I'm guessing you might want to reseal them, and apply A LOT of silicone. Also, try putting some silica gels inside the headlight housings. They help absorb moisture and have worked very well for me.
i put tons of silicon, and i sprayed my headlights with a hose to check for leaks and none, ill give the silica gels a try to see if it will take some of the humidity out the air that must be trapped in there.
