Blacking headlights

Can someone please give me detailed instructions on how to paint the inside of the headlight housing? I wanted to just buy some but havent had any luck. Also as an alternative, are there any good headlight tints?

If you just want to buy some pre-blacked here you go. Its the best deal I've found on Ebay for them. More expensive, but less work involved haha

Mod Edit... No Ebay links

Those are def aftermarket. There is no difference in light output, no difference in looks besides the black inside the lights. Try them out and let us know.

those lights are the same design as 00-01..it would downgrade the looks due to the glass protector over the hid bulb...thats not for 02-03

the 99 -01 have a difuser infront of the bulb. the 02-03 do not. You wont have any difference in light output.

Why not just take yours apart and paint them. All you have to do is open it up, sand the chropme area down with some fine grit paper (like 320-400) and paint them black. Its not rocket science and there isnt any special thing or paint you need to do it

Oh my bad, didnt even notice you had the later 2nd gen. But on "downgrading the look"...no it wouldnt. It only would if you had no sense and installed them on the 02 or 03 model, which the housing is a completely different outer design anyhow. So yeah IF you installed them on a 02 or 03 like a moron it def would downgrade lol . That and you'd have an odd dip in your bumper where these HL's dont fill . And as for quality, a buddy of mine has these exact ones and they are made exactly like the oem ones, just black. Its quality stuff IMO, but to each is own.

Do you really have to sand down the chrome? All the DIY's I read no one has sanded down the chrome, they just spray over it. I plan on blackhousing this weekend.

You dont HAVE to sand the chrome, but considering those D2R bulbs get pretty hot, you would want to. The paint will just adhere better to something a little bit courser. Also, you wouldnt need to sand the chrome off, or even destroy its look. you just throw some 300-400 grit sandpaper on it, which feels a lot rougher than it really would be on the chrome, and use it until you see little swirl marks on the chrome. If you decide to back out, or ever want to un-black them, you sand the black paint and primer (which you should use for maximum durability) off, then use 1500 grit, followed by 2000 grit, then 2000 grit w/ 3M "1500-2000" rubbing compound together, then just the compound to bring it BACK to the original shiney chrome.

"Blah Blah Adam, shutup and just answer the question" yeah i know, but i just thought i might address a few future questions that could arise

Goodluck

lol, good description. But unfortunatley today my black housing project failed. I wasnt able to take the back cover off the actual HID Bulb on one of the headlights (the plastic piece which your supposed to twist to unlock).. meh, maybe i'll give it another shot some day.

I would. To make the paint adhear better its always smart to prep the surface. You wouldnt want teh paint to start lifting and have to take it all apart again just to fix and do it right would you? How much longer will it take to sand them down?? 30 min tops! Its time well spent to do it right

Oh trust me, I turned so hard till my bones in my fingers started to crack. I have red marks all over my palms from twisting. I had to get one of those star keys to get a screw out, and after that had to unlock.. meh i'll give it another shot in the future.

this is what i did. I took the headlights off the car, to take them apart I stuck them in the oven to heat up the glue, then pulled them apart. The chrome piece that got painted will slide right out. I took it to a body shop and they painted it with car paint-base coat clear coat.
