I agree--5-30 gets oil flowing fastest in cold temps that fl might get overnight
the 10-has no purpose in `sealing` weak piston rings

165 is nothing on these engines if you have done regular oil change in its life.

run a half can of seafoam in the oil before next change for 30 minutes drive
that will remove years of buildup in passages and improve oil pressure

agree on Fl weather in summer- if coolant more than 5 years old replace it now!
Also a new radiator cap never hurt anyone
a slight loss of sealing loses system pressure and less effective cooling

your guage should never go above its usual 1-2 lines below half
to go above that means problem= stop !!

not at all- thru the oil is for the oil system only

thru the vac port or TB is for the intake valves and pistons

thru the gas tank is for fuel system-injectors-and pistons

good seafoaming is a few methods

Those super High Mileage Oils are just regular Oils (Based on Regular Oil) with some additives, If you use Mobil 1 on da "TL" just:

Go with Mobil 1 Full Syn "Extended Performance" 5W-20 or 5W-30 both fully Available on Any Autozone..

And K&N HP-1004 Oil Filter:

Total Combo Costs about 69 bucks (6q of Oil + Filter).
A bit pricey but Fully Syn Oil is always Pricey, But ITS WORTH IT.

^^^ you can actually get that combo at Advanced Auto parts monthly oil sale for $34ish....

I think $30 for 5w-20 or 5w-30 and mobil1 oil filter and $35ish for the same in EP (Extended performance) and Mobil1 filter...

Mobil1 and Knn filters are made by the same manufacturer (if my memory serves me right)....

Awww We dont have an Advance Auto Parts in San Diego.... Crappy Autozone is Stealing my Cash...

What Ive Read is that the Mobil 1 Filter is more Cleaner (99.9% Stuff) but the K&N Allows more Oil Pressure (More Racing Stuff) soo Since we Love VTAK! K&N is the way to go.

the oil pressures involved in actual race engines- its way more than the TL, so its not an issue at vtec
Test on capture of material are a farce,,we dont have dirty engines so thats not an issue either! 99.3 vs 99.7 on `first pass` thru test equipment,,great- hows it work as it gets full of real world crud?

you can run the TL on almost anything for oil/filter, but I do suggest a decent to high quality filter for peace of mind,,not the w-mart special with no anti-drainback valve!

All i use are the Orange filter brand . Too many get hung up on the little details on why one is better than the other. If the filters were that bad they wouldnt be sold

for those who want to save on oil but dread entering the Big W
If it has an auto service area, a side door thru there goes direct to auto parts! and a register right by the same door

zone and Or's always have 5 qt oil/filter combo deals 20-30-40$ your choice of plain or fancy as price goes up

what kind of trans symptoms did you get before failure? gear slipping- hard to engage- wants to rev?
any history of fluid change in trans?

If the rest of the car is in decent shape- its worth dropping in an oddessy transmission or rebuild yours ~2000-2500
What car can you get to equal the TL for 3 grand?

165 is nothing on these engines, barely any wear in cylinders if you have kept up with oil changes
and the water pump-timing belt was changed,,coolant changed every 5 years etc

I had 225k on my TL before selling it and it ran perfect. 5W30 full synthetic always and you're good, these are super reliable motors. They truly are 10 out of 10 for reliability, even more reliable than most any 4 banger. Any name brand synthetic 5W30 will work great. I never seafoamed the crank case. I did use Amosil engine flush 3-4 times but that was it. Seafoam in the gas tank, never. I'm sure it's alright but BG44K, Amsoil, Redline and Gumout Regane are all better. Seafoam thru a vac line is awesome for upper valvetrain cleaning. Also Amsoil Power Foam works great too.

For oil filters K&N are expensive and no better than Fram exteneded guard or purlators pure one filters. Mobile 1 filters are about 3-4 bucks cheaper and just as good. K&N is good, but not worht 14-15 bucks a pop. Fram's are the easiest to get on and off though.

FYI: K&N Filters are 11 bucks on Autozone... I Would N E V E R use any kind of FRAM Filters, Even Less for Oil Filter. Insanely Cheap is always a bad thing.

Becouse they feel cheap.
Maybe Im crazy but the metal, and the filter screen look too cheap I dont trust its effectiveness..

Besides I dont think 11 bucks is expensive for a Filter so what the heck?

I read some really hostile reviews on Fram recently...In fact I got the extended wear Fram last week at Wal Mart and was going to return it but the reviews apply to the "extra guard" filter.

From now on in I am going with the Mobil One filters..

You are right on the money with the Seafoam testimonials...I followed your advice on the how to and it worked like a charm in my car as well as my sons CLP.......Thanks!

Fram extended guard filters are not junk and are not cheap. They are $8-10 bucks at walmart. I prefer Mobil 1 or Amsoil filters, both expensive, especially Amsoil, but have used Fram Extended Guard (no others though) and have had ZERO issues with any vehicle including my old than dirt 95 Ram 2500.

So is because they "feel" kinda like "I heard"??? Sorry, but i have never "felt" a filter that "feels" cheap that actually wasnt good at doing its job by how the exterior felt. If they were cheap and didnt do their job they wouldnt be in business

I have been running them for over a million driving miles, and have never had a motor related issue

I do think 11 bucks is expensive, especially for a filter (for most that change every 3-5k miles) Can you honestly say you are getting your moneys worth of filtering for the difference? Answer is No. But that is just me.

the funny part is all the testing with 99.8 or 99.5% `second pass efficiency`
and most dont know what that even means!!!

Suffice to say we never let our engines get that dirty because we change the oil at or by 7500 when the little dash light tells us to..
or do a monitoring program for longer oil runs

fsttyms1 would go 15kmiles on synth oil and change that fram filter at 7500
His ongoing oil analysis, and teardown of engine at 200,000 miles! show all was still like new inside!!

oakroad,
now the oil system is clean,,if not already done, run a can of seafoam thru just under half tank of gas
a few tanks later- run another can thru half tank

All thats left is spray clean the TB air plate inside TB thoat with carb cleaner/deep creep (seafoam aerosol) both sides and edges

i use Walmart 5w-30 $14 + $3 FRAM filter as well. what a savings there is No need to go SYNTHETIC OIL and Quality FILTERS for street use. They perform almost identical =) UNLESS u got money to throw away and makes ur EGO feels good.

Agree ONLY if you are changing your oil every 3k. If you are doing the manufacturer 7500 or extended then the added protection of syn is well worth it. I run 15k intervals. Saves me lots of money.

to me I would rather pay another $25 or so and get quality synthetic oil and a quality filter. Mobil 1 oil and filter
expecially considering I change every 7500 miles so not worth skimping and my ego is just fine - I am just not cheap

i was just about to ask which oil should i have put in on next oil change..they used 5w 30 last time and was gonna see about 10w 30 (cause thats what i put in when it gets low weeks prior to oil change)..but next week im just gonna let them put 5w 30 again without asking (im out of florida)

also this seafoam stuff is new to my ears...should i get a bottle of that and put sum in gas tank and oil before the oil change (like in the morning and do oil change late afternoon?)???my car is in the early 200's mileage stage and i do add cleaners every so often...

thanx 4 info mates
