2nd Gen TL auto transmission alternatives?

so let me get this straight the right way to do it would be swapping out the trans range switch and the oil cooler/filter assembly from my old 00 tl trann. and it would run perfect ( without limp mode)?

kdot or andretl; if you guys are thinking about doing this, would you mind making a nice picture-filled write up? I'm sure that would help many people out.
Another random thought.. Is it bad if my sportshift doesn't work? When i put it into SS, it lights up what gear I'm in, but shifts on it's own just like it normally would (not revved high or anything). Nothing else seems to be wrong with my transmission, other than the occasional stutter when going into 3rd.

my 02 TL-S 7 month old tranny slipped once on me 6 days ago in attempt a 1st or 2nd gear kick down, couldn't tell it hit the rev limiter, I took it to the acura dealership yesterday, they inveribly couldn't get it to slip for them, they said come back when the check engine light on> any one have an idea of how I can get a better tranny in my car under acura's 3 yr warranty, any ideas?

Hey AV6, just to confirm, I will be picking up an 04 TL auto tranny and will be swapping it into my 02 TL-S, all I need to do is swap out is the trans range switch and the oil cooler/filter assembly, if not the a straight up bolt on will limit the revving to 5000k? Most transmission shops advise for me to get a new ecu, is not really required when swapping out a new tranny? Thanks man!

Suck what and fuck who!!! No you do not need a ECU and I would stay away from that shop, like I have said swap thoses parts over, get a new filter and you "MIGHT" have to drill and tap a couple of holes, that is it.

yeah I'm just having my buddy swap it in, he used to work in a race shop so it should be pretty straight forward but what? you have to drill holes? I was unaware of that, I just assumed it would be a straight swap with the swapping of the sensors. Oh man, have to rethink this one then.

There was one time with a 05 oddy tranny I had to drill two holes that were already there and tap for M12X1.25, the bosses are in the casting, but were not drilled and tapped for a couple mounting holes where the oddy uses a little different mounting setup, I don't think there will be any of that using a 3rd gen tl tranny.

Hey NVA thanks...you are a great source of info... if you do another swap anytime soon do you think you can take some pictures and do even a quick DIY... I think with all the tranny failures for our 2G we could really use this info, but are just scared.
I am at 120K, and know if I have another issue, I will just try and go this route..

Is there a difference between the 04 and the 05-08 3rd gen 3.2 trans? Can I use either/or on my 03 TL-P because I leaning more towards 05-08. Im just looking for the easiest strait forward swap as possible.

I found this website in a deep search I was doing. I really appreciate the tips NVA-AV6 has posted.
Wanted to bring this thread back. I saw that the 03-07 Odyssey transmission will bolt up, but what is the main reason that it stops at 2006? From what I have read it seems there wasn't any change in the transmission for the later years up to 2010. Are the later years not necessarily listed due to no having first hand experience with them or was there a change made that I haven't been able to find out about?
Thanks for the replies...

I also forgot. In 1999 I noticed that there was a 4 speed automatic which later got replaced with the 5 speed w/ sport shift.
The TL I have is a 1999, but it has the lever to allow you to shift gears manually also. Does this mean that it would have the 5-speed in it?
Thanks again guys.

And one last thing since I can't edit my posts. I just re-read my sources and I found out the 4-speed also had the sport-shift which I now know thats what I have.
Was there really a major change in the engine harness from 1999 to 2000-2003 TL's that requires using a 00-03 harness if you have the 4-Speed and want to go to the 5-Speed Auto? Would it not be possible to just re-pin a few wires to get it to work? I don't have the electrical manuals for either TL so I can't see the difference at the moment.

im not sure if you can put a 5 speed in the 99 tl without replacing the ECU, which might make the engine run rich, i wouldn't since the 4 speed is more reliable.
basically since our throttle cant be cut in and out during shifts we will burn up any auto that gets placed in our engine bay. the newer TL's have basically the same tranny. most newer cars have the drive by wire and they all cut the throttle out for a second during shifting between gears. my moms 09 mazda 6 does it.

The 4-speed in the 1999 I will be working on has been replaced once under warranty and it's dead now and out of warranty so at this point it's no longer a matter of the 1999 transmission being more reliable. Throttle cut during shifts or not, the issue has always been with the clutch packs failing on the transmissions which was re-designed after '05 so I would assume the issue was addressed then. I am sure other cars out there behave the same way with an automatic transmission that are non-drive-by-wire and they are definitely not having an issue.
The two things still have questions about:
I'm still curious about the engine harness issue when going from a 1999 ECU to 2000-2003 ECU. I would think it's just a matter of swapping wires around but was wondering if anyone know from looking at the two harnesses if there are major physical differences (lengths, ect.) I think I will look at AllData tomorrow or sometime later this week and check the pin-outs for the 1999 and 2000-2003 model ECU.
Why aren't the '07 and up Odyssey transmissions talked about as being able to swap into the 3.2L TL (i only say up to '06).
Thanks and keep the replies coming

Also, I did see Acura is re-programming or replacing ECU's with different shift point data for the transmission. Anyone know more about that and if they do it for free as a service (I may take advantage of this when replacing the transmission).

2003 TL-p
well what i ment was i know running the type-s ecu on the 99 engine will run rich since the type-s has higher compression, someone has done it, i think Phee did when he did his 6 speed manual swap. as for the wiring harness i am unsure if you can plug a 00-03 ecu into a 99 wires. if you did you would want it to be a base model ecu and not the type s. check out some of the 6 speed swap threads under the DIY section for ecu wiring, you might find what ur looking for.

you will have to transfer a couple of parts from your old tranny, the trans range switch and the oil cooler/filter assembly, other than that it is a stright bolt up. Now if you have a 4spd TL/CL you will also have to get a new engine wire harness and ECU from a 5spd TL/CL and may* have to do a little repin/rewire for the chassis connection to the ECU.

So is a 2005 odyssey tranny problem free? or does it have to be 2006 to be safe? I found a local one 05 for 650 with 75k miles. The 06 are all 900 or 1000 with 50k miles. I dont want to have to pull it apart again i want it to last. What year was the problems fixed completly?

Ok I have done a bit more research. It seems to me that the transmission is completely different once you hit 2007-2008 Acura TL's. The parts are completely different (for the 3.2L), but from 2004-2006 the parts are pretty much the same. I can't seem to find the proper information on this, but does anyone know if the bellhousing and mounting stayed the same from 2007-2008 or was that changed too?
Is 2007-2008 even possible into a second generation? It would be nice if NVA-AV6 would reply here, but I can't get a hold of him since my account doesn't allow PM'ing at the moment.
As far as transmission years, this is what I have come up with from my research that seems to be the "safe years" to use:
· 7th Generation (2005-2007) Honda Accord V6
· 3rd Generation (2006-2008) 3.2L Acura TL (non Type-S) ---(again not sure about 2007-2008)
· 3rd Generation (2005-2006) Honda Odyssey

the 3rd gen trans swaps.....
What are the issues of getting the complete engine and trans swap for a 3rd gen into a 2nd gen ?
I know the exhaust is differnt and the drive by wire TB setup but what else.
Mounts ?
just curious.
I assume you would be the one who will know.
biggest question.
What is the best setup to just pull from another honda/acura and drop in for a 2nd gen?
And I mean to actually pull and drop in ,not to tare apart a j32a2 and build it.

Curious to know though, why is the reason they don't fit? Is it a bellhousing issue and completely new mounting points/sensors?
