WTF! Shifter is locked.

This morning when I got in the car my shifter is locked.... I CANNOT get out of park, turned car on and off a few times, jerked wheel around, held the brake, etc. Nothing worked. I remember somebody told me that on most auto trans, there is a release button, which I managed to find this morning on our car it is under the fingernail sized tab that you must pop off to remove the shift gate assembly. So I drove to school with a screwdriver to "unlock" the shifter when needed(park to drive, drive to park, reverse, etc). A few minutes ago I put a plastic rivet like thing in there to hold the release down so I can shift freely.
Any idea what could be going on?

your brake light fuse is blown. check which fuse it is in the owners manual and replace the blown fuse.

Would it be the "stop" fuse, or the "back up ACC"?

do your brake lights work first of all??? also will your cruise control engage and stay engaged till you push the brake (they each go through different portions of the brake switch; it is a two-pole switch)

That same thing happened to me once, All I did was get down on the floor by the break pedal and find the switch that gets depressed when you step on the brake to start the car, I cleaned it with a rag and clicked it a few times with my finger and it hasn't been a problem since. Hope thats all it is for you.

Its called the safety switch for a reason
If the brake light switch is not working- meaning you have no brake lights, the car wont start without some work - to let you know there is a problem

Have someone press the brake pedal while you inspect EACH bulb including the center light- are they working at all? and all bulbs are working?
Check switch assembly behind brake pedal for wires connected and grunge on contacts, clean with crc or wd40
easy diy replace

or the nuetral safety switch is bad- that keeps it from starting in gear, must be in N or P ck brake stuff first

To start the car in this situation acura made it easy!

remove that plastic cover on right side of shift panel
Insert ignition key in slot and push down slightly
Put car in N while pushing brake pedal-
remove key and put key in ignition
start car- will have to repeat when you park again for next start
no need to drive with screwdriver in it~

read owner manual for info like this- they are free online

I did a lil more research about it yesterday on here, and it turns out it was the brake switch. I got one for 28 bucks and replaced it in all of 4 minutes.
Thanks guys

Thanks, the hardest part was removing the wire harness, the clip is kinda small in a already uncomfortable working position.
It was $36.xx originall, but I had a 10 off 25 coupon from Advance Auto.

You can print the coupon at Advancegrandopenings.com
