winter tires quarter mile

used dynolicious to record a quarter mile after my oil change yesterday. Very disappointed in my snow tires, i had wheelspin all the way till 40mph. basically i screwed up gear changes from 1-2 (i was gate-shifting) because of lack of traction. I regret cheaping out on tires should have got the pirellis instead. i pull about 15.2s in summer with Michelin MXM4s and 0-60 of 6.89s best. although the weather could have also been a factor.

temprature -7'c, humidity 80%, light snow

power, Timings..

oh i almost forgot the tires are goodyear nordics on steel rims.

oh i forgot my question. So is there a way to reduce wheel spin? i am running 37 psi cold. I also had wheelspin on the all-season at the same psi. Do you reduce tire pressure to reduce wheelspin or you raise it (for all-season streets specifically)

Put summer tires on the front for your runs and make the PSI about 22. Use D3 and just go. Use the throttle to maximize traction and minimize spinning. Do not mash the pedal out of the hole. Take a full second to reach full throttle. Remove all dead weight from the car and have low fuel. Stock I think a TL (not type-S) should do about a 15.3 @ 94mph, not entirely sure. Wait for a sunny day too.

I used the Michelin MXM4s in a decent amount of snow like half a foot or so (freak snowstorm, plowing - even went up and down several steep hills). Got home a-ok, no slippage, no nothing, first time driving in snow.

Pickler how do you have your iphone mounted in your car? I kind of secured mine in the cup holder making sure that it wouldn't move, but I didn't seem to get accurate results. I don't really see why you're concerned with how fast your car will go on winter tires. That's not their purpose...I'd say leave the 0-60 times for the summer man. By all means enjoy your ride all year round like I try and do, but winter is no place to be tearing it up (unless you're driving an evo/sti/any awesome awd car).

well since i live where it is winter 9 out of 12 months of the year and with short summer where im usually on vacation i do 90% of my driving on snow tires. i put them on in october and take them off late april. june-aug i do not work and do not drive much if im in town. plus the amount of salt they put on the roads here is crazy and when its mixed with melted snow it gets everywhere. the whole of my rdx underbody was corroded in 1 year. therefore i do not drive my 135i in winter and i garage it unless its dry sunny out. so right now im back behind the wheels of my TL and i want it to be in good condition. i also wanted to see how these tires perform in subzero temps (goodyear nordics).

as for the mounting, i place the phone in a Kensington holder i bought from bestbuy that installs on the windshield. i paid about 30$ for it.

it was good weather today sunny with dry ground. so i did another run...we went as a group with my friend and his '06 XRS, and also my wife wit the 135. so for the TL this is wat i did:
i got the michelin energy installed back on. also the place i go is a friend's farm with a private road and its about 30km from my house so i couldn't go as low as 22psi i went with a safer 26psi because of highway travel. That's about 11 psi lower than last run. Temprature was the same -7c, with less humidity ~60% and dry ground. turned off ac, stereo, cleaned the tires and open the hood to cool the engine before run. all that effort and my time came out slower
next after feeling really pissed off i watched my friend's XRS with CAI beat my 0-60 and quarter then we did the bmw.. it actually improved over the summer... i have no idea what to do about the TL. it's a full second slower than few months ago (0-60 7.8s vs 6.8s, 16s vs 15.2 1/4) thinking of CAI new tires and exhaust. i also think the calibration must be wrong for the dynolicious app.

3.2 TL:

XRS:

135:

Hahaha how is it estimating the XRS at 190 hp...Please...

Pickler how can you complain about winter to a guy who lives in Edmonton...Our shit is way worse out here for the same period of time. You guys don't get that nasty of winters out east around Toronto and often have an earlier spring (got family out there).

There are so many factors that could affect the TL. How full was the gas tank on the second run?

If you're looking for a real upgrade get a lightweight crank pulley and headers. Those two mods should be first, and will cost less than an intake and cat-back exhaust that won't even provide a quarter of the power gains.

also i am not too sure about a crank pulley doesnt that mess with the engine balance. and as for exhausts i have no idea. don't cold air intakes provide the biggest bang for the buck? i am also suspecting carbon buildup in the engine maybe i should get some fuel injector cleaners.
