winter is here!!!

yesterday when i was getting off work the temp. was -28C, and I let my car warm up for 5 minutes before driving. I am guessign that wasnt enought since shifting wasnt very smooth. Does this help damage the tranny? Any sugestions on how to minimize this, keep in mind that it may get down to -50C ish like last winter?

Holy FCK! -50ish! Jeebus! My guess is that yes 5mins is not enough time for the car to warm up and def not enough for the tranny as it takes even longer than the engine. It most likely will do damage to the tranny if you do this often. I would invest in the engine block heater acura makes for the TL and driving smoother when the trans is warming up.

Sounds like where I live. Where are you in Canada? I had to shovel 2" of snow after getting off work last night in -33C windchill. Not fun at all! I don't have a block heater, but since I have a heated garage at home and no place to plug in at work, I won't bother putting one in. Block heaters don't really warm up tranny fluid anyway so I tend to drive slowly and gently until everything heats up a bit. Synthetic oil, good battery, remote car starter, and winter tires and I am set for another joyful Canadian winter.

Try warming it up for 10 minutes before driving.

Once it's warmed up, drive south.

well actually, the tranny stays cool until you start moving, so just take it easy until you have been driving for about 20 mins. maybe more becuase of that weather. but you should def let the car warm up for 10 mins but not more than 15

That's what I was getting at too. Just take it easy until the friction builds up and the fluid gets recirculated for a while. With -50 outside I don't know if that will even happen. My trans shifts slighty rough even at +50 until I get going down the road a bit.

I hope you are using Amsoil 0w20. That is freezing. I'd warm it up for a min/max of 5 minutes. Keep that tranny fluid changed and full.

vtec260: I live in Edmonton, and I just got a car 2 months ago so my next step is the remote car starter since I got new tires already. Now my seat heater doesnt work, it just stoped working 2 weeks ago so i am pissed and I realy need it haha.

haha I live in Canada cuz thats where they sent me 6 years ago when i came here from europe, so i got used to it I guess. well standard of living not the weather, haha. And I dont feel like moving now, I got a good job and some good friends so I am good here.

I lived in Edmonton for a year several years back a few blocks away from West Edmonton Mall. Loved it there. I am in 'Peg now. Sorry about the Eskies.

We live in Canada because of free health care that our high tax dollar pays for. LOL But air is crisp and clean drinkable water is abundant.

Just drive it slow until it warms up. (If that's even possible in that kind of weather)

well 6% cuz I live in alberta, other provinces have 7%GST which is government tax plus 7% provincial. My province doesnt have provincial tax and they lowered the government tax to 6% and maybe 5% in a couple of months. and around christmas everyone gets a 400$ check for being a good citizen lol or some shit like that so thats why I live where I live. But dont get me wrong, porn is good too man, porn is REAL good.

Note to all gen2 tl'rs

There is a program in the computer- part of the warm up the engine fast system
You are supposed to let engine warm a few minutes then drive slowly in severe cold.
The trans is programmed to hold 1st and 2nd longer and rev higher before shifting
After a few minutes or miles or kms it should be smooth again
Getting the engine warm is a big priority of the computer so it get into gas saving territory
A moving vehicle makes it get warmer faster than sitting parked

Actually, it's 6% GST across Canada (goods and sales tax ... kind of like Europe has a VAT ... a tax on everything) ... but that goes down to 5% starting January 1st, 2008 because the tax surplus the federal gov't has been collecting is being 'redistributed' with a lower GST. I think you may have mistaken a HST (harmonized sales tax) that the Maritime provinces have (state tax + GST combined together) ... so their tax might be a scary 13-14%, but that includes both taxes.

The $400 you speak of is a handout the Alberta gov't gives back to the citizens of that province due to the surplus of oil royalties / various taxes the gov't collects. Some might get a GST rebate because they don't make enough money, but that's like $80. Ontario always gets screwed with paying taxes.

Anyway ... too bad you got -50C temps. It's cold here in southern Ontario ... high of "only" +2C. Maybe 2cm of snow so far this season. I don't need satellite or cable to watch American channels or receive HD stations (I live across from Detroit, MI) and I can shop in the US whenever I want to take advantage of the strong CAD$. Then again ... the air here is polluted like hell ...
