Post windshield wiper speed

Hey guys,

I have noticed something weird about my windshield and I'm not sure if my TL is messed up or if its just the way the car is designed. I know there are two settings in terms of speed for our wipers (Hence the two different rotational settings). I assumed that first notch meant slow and second notch meant fast (relatively). Am I wrong? For the TL, I noticed that if I have it on the 'slow' setting it will just automatically go to the fast setting as soon as my car is in motion. Now, it goes to the 'slow' speed if my car is stopped or roughly stopped say under 5 mph. Is this right?

Thanks,
TLracr

I think we have 4 speeds. First click is variable speed, use the little turning thing on the windshield wiper knob. Second click is slow, same as turning the variable speed all the way up. I think there are 2 more clicks, fast and really damned fast.

Well, I'm sure that the second click is a speed faster than the speed on other cars. The first click might be variable, I have to go check on that. Thanks. But you're saying that there are more clicks after the second one?

I believe that the intermittent setting (setting 1) will speed up to low (setting 2) when you move the car. They mention something about it in the manual but it is in my car (hmmm, I wish there was something online...)

I think there's three settings, intermittent, slow, and fast. The intermittent setting can be further adjusted using the dial, which at the slowest setting is speed-sensitive, and at the highest setting is about the same as the slow setting. The speed-sensitive feature is a pretty nice touch.

Yep, speed-sensing wipers. Too bad no rain-sensing like in Benzes, though...

This is not related but did you know that your airbag is also speed sensing. Cool huh? Well...dual sensing anyway.

Speed sensing how? Didn't see that in my manual, and yes I do RTFM. At the lowest setting there is a long pause between the wipes no matter my speed.

I think that's only for the passenger front bag.

As for the side bags, they seem like they'd blow my elbow off the way I rest my arm on the arm rest while I drive. I'd rather have a side bag that comes out of the door instead of the side of the seat, but oh well - I always have my right elbow if I loose the left one...

Yeah, the airbags sensitivity is a great safety feature that will save you money if you are the only person in the car. The passenger seat has sensors that can detect passenger weight and height (I think), and the speed of the airbag will be adjusted accordingly. If there is no weight detected in the passenger seat, the passenger airbag will not deploy, saving you big money in an accident. I used to drive a Nissan 240SX, and I had the airbags go off during a fender bender. The total damage to the outside of the car was estimated at $450 to cover bumper realignment and paint. The airbag bill was nearly $6,000! Most cars have a seam for the passenger airbag doors underneath the vinyl for the dash. When the passenger bag blows - you guessed it - the door covering the airbag compartment blows open, ripping through the dashboard. I had to buy two new airbags, mounting hardware, new sensors and A NEW DASHBOARD, to mend my car for $450 worth of exterior damage!!!

My USAA insurance covers airbags 100% if they ever deploy, with no deductible. I think they're trying to encourage people to buy newer cars that have airbags. I hope you didn't have to eat the cost...

SinnedTL,

You almost sound like Red Hot sometimes. Nothing wrong with Red, he's pretty funny and he provides starts interesting threads. But telling people to read their manuals is one thing but by the same token you could say that same crap to any question. Look it up on the web. Look it up in the manual. I admit, I probably could've looked it up in the manual but the the best thing about this forum is the coverage, you get fast knowledgeable responses and basically more than you bargained for. I bet there are a ton of people who read this post that learned a lot like I did. I'm pretty sure a lot people don't read through the manual and do a comprehensive search online before asking a question. I'm pretty sure you don't either. A lot of us are lazy admittedly but why not advantage of the resources here? Its just easier to ask a question like that here. You end up learning more. Granted really obvious questions brought up over and over again are unnecessary. But I haven't seen a post regarding this topic yet.

Evan
