Will TL's ever be able to manually shift 1st to 2nd
I HATE the fact that i cant control 1st to 2nd. it defeats the whole purpose of having a sports shift (for launching anyways). when i had my tranny rebuilt. the guy who did the rebuild mentioned that my tranny was ready for any software upgrades to the TCU (transmission control unit?) i asked what kind of upgrades would that entail. he said that eventually someone will come out with an update to allow us to control shifts from 1st to 2nd.
i had a shift kit put in the tranny to make it shift faster. i think this was done by putting a spring in the shifting mechanism with a higher compression spring and somehting else , i forget. so my tranny shifts quick, but i want to be able to hold 1st. any ideas?

I find the ability to down shift to first when flying around corners amazing in the 99's...
Without being able to hold on to first, or downshift to first I can almost gaurentee the 99's will pull around a 90 degree corner faster than a 5spd.... When doing it in the 5spd, you complete the corner and punch the gas... now the car tries to get power out of 2nd gear and after a sec or two it automatically downshifts to 1st, the problem is that once it shifts into first the gear, it is basically in the redline right away (close to 5500)... With the 99 when you downshift coming out of the turn (cutting the 1-2 seconds of wait time out) the RPMs are usually about 3500, giving you the best part of the powerband for acceleration...
I've heard about too many people allowing their wife/girlfriend/friend to drive the car... the person shifts the car into SS (thinking it is D) and proceeds to drive the car on the highway in 2nd gear!! When the car automatically shifts from 1st to 2nd the driver is sometimes tricked to think it is in auto not SS. There's some heat for our transmission...lol

1st gear isn't tall enough for a 90 DEGREE CORNER... Sure buddy, how fast are you taking these corners then? ... I've driven both the 5spd and the 4spd.. . If the 5spd doesn't automatically drop to first going around the corner (have to be going slow for this to happen), you'll stay in 2nd untll you punch the gas and then the car downshifts. I'll downshift while accelerating through the turn putting the car in it's best range for hp... 3500+RPM. Typically by the time the 5spd downshifts to 1st, it puts the car into the +5000rpm range, not leaving much of 1st left. So before you know you are into 1st the car is shifting to 2nd..
Don't take it as an insult.... I swallowed a 1/2 take of gas while following a 911 Turbo for 20 min at 190km down the 407 here in Toronto. I think the cruizing rms were ranging from 3000 to 4500..... I wish I had the extra gear then!! I could almost see the gas gauge moving... lol
And I probably couldn't take you around a corner because of the +200lbs of stereo in the trunk..

I was actually talking about turning right.. I drove SC354's Type-s around my neibourhood (family type area) with him.. I took a right turn and Jeff told me to punch it.. so I did.. and I felt very little pull because we were in 2nd.. a second or two later the car drops into the 5000+ range of 1st gear.. OFF WE WENT... the car flew then. It just felt awkward when the car lagged for those seconds...

+7 for '99TL!!!
if its quick turning you wanna do its all about weigh transfer...make sure you get as much as you can on the front wheels (breaking) and right after the apex of a curve (natural insctinct) you start giving it gas...can't beat this.
if its winning you wanna do....usually the craziest driver either wins or dies...but most likely doesnt loose
^^basis for drifting....drifting on a fwd sux...drifting is NOT the fastest way to take a corner
btw 3rd can be held untill 125-126mph @ ~6400 (redline 6250)
but the difference in acceleration by 4th gear is incredible when this is done
