Yes if you have a 99TL it will chrome.

1)remove the shift knob (blue arrow) by turning it counter clock wise. (just turn it, you won't break anything)
2)stick a flat head screw driver or your nail on the edge(red arrow) and pull that piece out.
3) This is the hardest part, either pull the shift plate to one side and pull it up. Or stick a screw drive in the two holes in each side and see if you can loosen it up (becareful not to break anything, please look and use your brain.) Work on being able to pull one side out.

4) dip the shift plate in paint remover.
5) *optional* clean area before putting the chrome shift plate back
6) put everything back.

thanks hzm82, now i got a blingy blingy shiftgate, just took some of that rubber cement lookin' stripper and plopped a couple globs onto the shiftgate, and within seconds, i could see the paint cracking off, only took about 30-40 seconds till i could rub the pain off. Thanks again guys.

Thinners ususally don't work or don't work well. Paint Remover/stripper is what you need. Darkshear recommended 'Graffiti Remover' and said it strips it under a min. I used a general purpose paint/varnish remover from Lowels and left it in for about 5 mins before it started peeling.

Old thread but I am trying to remove the paint and got a can of "Graffiti Remover" from Goo Gone. The only problem is that the paint doesn't wrinkle up all at once and it started from the edges then worked its way towards the center. So after 3 hours worth of spraying, I have only been able to remove the paint from the edges and a long scar on the main plate. Is there a way to speed this up? I am getting high on the fumes and I did it on an open ground in the streets!

Do you have a 99? It only will work on a 99. Umm how long are you letting it sit before washing it off? It worked like a charm on mine so I don't see what the problem is unless your doing something wrong.

Yes I do have a 99. I spread the stuff on the plate inside a bag and let it sit from 1 - 3 minutes, then I take it out and rinse it off with water and start the rubbing process with a towel...
