Why DVD nav does not play regular DVD

I am trying to guess/understand why ACURA do not
provide NAV DVD player to play regular DVD movie's.

My immediate response is:

1. If driver plays movies while he is driving ?,
Ans: They should come up with some thing to stop
driver doing so. This is not a sufficient reson to not to have this feature.

2. ?.
..............

I feel it doubles or triples the use of DVD based NAVi in ACURA if it comes factory provided support.

"This is not a sufficient reson to not to have this feature. "

not for you, but it was for acura.

the easiest way for the to prevent you from watching movies was to remove the feature, instead of reprogramming the whole thing.

acura is part of honda, which is VERY STINGY with money.

that's why owners have had so many quality issues with their cars.

I think its about some programming, rather than the money
involved in making this happen.

I think there is some reason, may be technical too

"Q: Will my Navigational System play DVD Movie Discs?

A: The drive will physically accept a DVD Movie Disc, but cannot play it. Some state government regulations prohibit the placement of entertainment displays within viewing range of the driver. "

The above is a direct quote from the Acura web site, FAQ on the navigation DVD.

Not to mention the dvd formats that exist. You need special hardware to decode video which our players do not have. Also any car that comes with a video entertainment center never had the screens in view of the driver (inifinity, nissan, etc.. all have screen that flip down from where our dome light is) its all about saftey....lots of dump people out there

You can always convert your Nav screen to play video and add an aftermarket TV tuner/DVD player

Frys electronics sells DVD players for $49.99 on some sale,
So having charged 1500 $ for DVD NAV, adding a video decoder
should not be a costly.

They could shutdown DVD Player when driving, its that simple to
by pass state law.

Like I said, lots of members are trying to get a RGB1 decoder (including myself). There's almost noplace you can find the RGB1 decoder now.

Therefore, I gave up on RGB1 mod & in process working with GEX-P7000TV now. Hope this will work!!

In addition to legalities a manufacturer of a DVD decoder must include the CSS copy prevention encryption software other wise most DVD movies won't play ... and a liscense for that software is $1,000,000 as I recall.

Do a search for "DSCSS" "copy protection DVD license" and you can read for hours.

That fact that everyone and their dog uses Napster / Kaaza and the like is not helping the situation.
