Unhappy Why does my car stink when..

Why does my car stink after I floor it? For instance the other day I was racing (and getting killed) a M3 on the toll way and about 5-10 seconds after I floored it a horrific smell filled the cabin. It's kind of like an exhaust/burning smell. This happens all the time. Sometimes I notice it when I park the car after pushing it real hard. Is it carbon burning? Is it exhaust fumes? Is it my tranny burning up? Please help! :wow:

If it smells like rotton eggs, that's your catalytic converter. The sulphur smell from the exhaust, is actually caused by running the engine/cat convertor slightly lean for long periods and then running under a rich condition (ie going up a hill under heavy load) This is when the sulphur smell (rotten egg) is produced.

Under relatively lean conditions, the sulphur found in gasoline is converted to sulphur trioxide, then during the rich running condition the sulfur trioxide is converted into hydrogen sulphide (rotten egg smell) within the catalytic converter.

Audi of America issued a service bulletin which detailed this problem. They list the cause as the gasoline sulphur content and the characteristic of catalytic convertor to store sulphur compounds and release them during rich engine running conditions. Switching gasoline brands may help.

Now if it smells like burned rubber, hot metal, etc then it could be something else.

Try switching your choice of gasoline and see if it helps.

Don't eat Taco Bell before racing. It might just be natural gas being released from your body during anxious times. Sorry, couldn't resist

...better yet, when racing M's be sure you have Degree deodorant on: it kicks in when the heat is turned up. In that way you'll still be smelling spring fresh when you lose
