Who'd Win? 2001 Acura TL-P vs. 1991 Ford Mustang 5.0 LX???

Sup guys...I'm soon to be a proud owner of a 2001 Laguna Green Acura TL-P next year as a graduation gift from college. Needless to say, I'm salivating in anticipation and already have listed in my mind the mods I want to put on it.

Currently though, it is still my momma's but I take it out and drive it occassionally and have some fun with it. I like to WOT it (Wide Open Throttle...a cool term I learned while reading these boards) and have to admit that even the TL-P is pretty quick off its feet. I really envy those who own a Type-S. ARgh! You lucky bastards!

Anyways, my friend owns a 1991 Ford Mustang 5.0 LX. We always wanted to race but have yet gotten the chance to. We wonder who would win since our car specs are similar. The specs on his car are:

225 HP V8 engine (automatic)
Rear wheel drive
275 lbs. of torque
K&N Air Filter

My 2001 Acura 3.2 TL-P
225 HP V6 engine (automatic of course)
Front wheel drive
216 lbs. of torque
K&N Air Filter

So what do you guys think? I'll let you guys play referee and call this one. I've raced my friend before in my 1993 Acura Vigor which is only 175 HP....but I'm able to hang with him a bit before he takes off. So I'm sure the TL would be more than able to hold its own.

you'll win... the 91 LX 5.0 with just a K&N filter is going to be just a tad slower than a TL-P. Be careful when you guys race, find a track if you can...

With a race like that... It depends on the drivers... The mustang should be able to win, but not by much... This past weekend a friend and I raced with my 2000 tl-p and his 91 mustang 5.sl0w... I told him I wanted to experiment, and so the first race we drove our own cars and I won, then we switched, did a couple practice runs to get adjusted to each others cars, then raced again and I won in his car... Both races were close though, the mustang is better at the start, but the TL is better at the end...

I agree completely, find a nice safe place before you try this. Maybe like the Track.

My biggest question is...
Why is he driving an AUTO Mustang?
Did someone GIVE him the car?

unless you have a TL-S that's pretty well modded, i hate to break it to you but he wasn't racing. before i put a blower on my 98 cobra, 99+ GT's could hang bone stock until i hit high rpm's in third gear, then i would pull. there's no way in hell a TL could come close in any gear to my cobra when it was stock. either way the guy must not have been racing because those cars are still hella fast.

I've only lost to an 03 Cobra and 2000 Cobra R, an 89 5.0 with 200 shot nitrous that runs 12's... Otherwise, I've beat all the rest 5.0's, last gen GT including 95 5.0... the current gen Roush II, GT's. Dare you call BS...

A 1991 Auto LX is gonna be about a 14.8-15.1 ride, faster than a TL-P and about as fast as a TL-S. You can get those cars into the low 14's by just changing rear gears and putting a higher stall TQ converter (without adding any power).

You should lose.

I was driving home from work today and I saw a 5.slow(probably '91-'92) weaving in and out of traffic driving like a moron. So I pulled up next to him (on the roll) and just took off it wasnt' even close. I haven't even done anything to my TL cuz I just got it but I think you can beat your friend with the mustang. Especially if it's a auto. But that's just me.

that mustang may have run those times when new, but there is no way in hell that the same mustang over 10 years old is gonna pull those numbers with a k&N filter. I'd put my money on the TL from 0-100 and a highway run of 50 plus.

stock for stock, i'd say light to light he'd loose, but give the P a chance to get from 0-high speeds and he'd win, from 50 and up i'd say it'd be close till he hits 4th. I know that with my mods i walk a 92 gt all day long everytime i see him.

I hate to be the one to spoil your fun. I am disgusted with my TL, its on its 3rd transmission in under 40k miles. If the car is lucky enough to get to the track where your going to race, you'll still lose. I had an '88 Cougar 5.0 modified slightly (exhaust, chip and Air Flow) and it was just about a 5 second car.

What year is your TL? And how have you been driving it? I have had my 2001 TL, purchased in 2000 for almost three years now and no problems as of yet has arisen. *knock on wood*

I got my 2001 TL in October 2000, I have been driving it moderately, my drive to my office each way is 20 miles (17 are highway). Weekends we normally take my wife's Nissan Path (more or less to balance miles on cars).

Its a real shame, I went from a Taurus SHO that was in the shop a lot, to looking for the most reliable car I could find. So, I went for an Acura..... The SHO was more reliable! Can you believe that. A Yamaha engine that the dealer's had trouble working on and finding problems has proven itself to be a more reliable car!

In 2 years and 8 months, my car has been off the road for about 11 weeks total. Tansmission x 2, steering, calipers, alternator..... this car has been a winner. Yet I still love the NSX! Scarry, huh?

You sound kind of young (sorry if I'm wrong).

With a fresh license and a nice car you shouldn't be racing. You really don't know how to handle a car even if you think you do. Too many kids where I live have fast cars and think they know how to drive. Sadly they end up as statistics.

Now what you should be doing when you get that TL is learn how to Zano the hell out of it. Make that beoch shine and get the ladies in that car. You will then be thinking about a different kind of racing.

Close race

If the 5.0 was 5-speed, it'd launch a TL-S no problem. Auto however, they're dogs... prob a good race.

My '90 5.0 5-speed ran 14.40 @ 95mph bone stock.

A stock 5.0 with an automatic will be close but might lose against your TL-P. A Type S would kick its trash.

Whats interesting is my best friend has an '89 5.0 automatic convertible (adds weight) and I can beat him (barely) in my '97 3.2 TL.

You could probably beat an '89 AUTO Ragtop on foot.
They are heavy as hell and the AUTO adds almost .8 seconds in the 1/4 when it comes to Mustangs.

On top of that, most of them came from the factory with a 2.73 rear. Most people will upgrade to at least 3.55's...
If that has been done, watch out.:wow:

You can beat him man, cuz he has a 225 hp V8, and the v8 weighs more than the 225 v6, and as one of the Benz racers said: weight is the enemy of performance. he has more torque than you, but i'm pretty sure that his car may weigh more. But remember that the TL is a family sedan, the mustang is a sports coupe.
