Where is the noise coming from!?!?
Mostly just venting but if somebody has an idea........
So as the title says I still have a clanging metal noise going over bumps! I have pretty much changed every front end suspension part over the last 6 months. First I did 2 new struts. a month later new tie rod ends, then upper control arms with ball joints, a few weeks later i did new sway bar links and just yesterday i brought my steering knuckles to pepboys and had two new lower ball joints inserted. Put it all back together, took the car for a spin and still have this metal banging sound going over bumps on the passenger side. I dont get it, what else is there....

So, to make sure I am understanding we are talking about the same parts - these are the pieces that screw on to the new struts and hold the springs with it right?

front end, sounds like right under the hood on the passenger side wheel area. I think the guys might be right with thinking top hat for shock/spring

its the rubber bushings that the top part of the shock goes thru on the metal plate that holds the spring.
Can you get it to duplicate buy bouncing up and down on the car? maybe with the hood open to listen better??

no i cant duplicate it by bouncing, only "good" bumps. But i think that is it. Can you buy the bushings seperate or do i just buy the whole plate new?

Also make sure all the parts are put in properly and not missed or backwards.

thanks, i need to look at those parts then, unfortunalely that means renting a strut spring compressor again and pulling it apart. i think it might be that though. I just want everything right, lately i have been on a mission to make my car like new again and fall in love all over!
its depressing to do all that work and take aride and still have a noise. I wonder if i should replace the top hats as well while i am there? Those parts just sit right on top of the strut correct?
Thanks again!

they are just what the spring sits on and the bolts holds them inplace.
Has the sound gotten any different or gone away at all during all this just to come back? Have you inspected the motor mounts?

i have not insoected motor mounts, prob need to be done by now anyway, i have 140,000 miles on her. but the noise sounds like it is high up in engine bay, right where struts connect to the car, so i am thinking you are right on. the noise has not gotten any worse or better, i only hear it on harsh bumps, just a loose metal clang kind of noise.

I would then take apart the strut and spring and replace those parts (they are cheap enough. (ive actually got a set im planning on replacing on mine as they are still original) Make sure all the parts are in the correct order and there.

Ok last question! I looked under my hood and noticed something, I dont know if this is enough for the clanking or not but part #5 in the diagram is missing 2 nuts on it, it looks like they stripped off of the bolts under the hood, NOW the rest of them are very tight. Is this enough to make the noise i am hearing??? Starting to go nuts now,
