When to Trade

I drive a 00 tl with 65000 miles. The car is in great shape and looks and runs like new. I'm concerned that it's age and mileage will take a toll on reliability. How long can a car be kept without having to worry about breakdowns and major repair bills? Any thoughts?

no, i took very good care of that car. The only thing that wore out was the clutch gear I think because I drive like a maniac, and I also hit some bumps so the compressor took some damage on the bottom of the car. Interior is in awesome condition, minor scratches from idiots at college.

I really loved that car!

65000 miles, it's just broken in for a honda! I'm at 172000km (107500 miles), and my first gen TL has had no breakdowns. Only major repair has been outer C/V boots that cracked when it was like -45 outside.

My '96 has had no major issues after 96000 miles. Don't worry about it.

I'm at 181,500 miles in an '00 TL with headers, cold air intake and pulleys. It runs perfectly and uses no oil yet has been in VTEC (over 4400 rpm's) by my rough calculations over 3000 times. This engine burns nor drips any oil at all and runs like new AND still sounds like new. Breakdowns are caused by neglect of the cooling system (belts and hoses) usually or neglect of the battery....just buy a new one every four years regardless if it is new or not. Keep ALL fluids fresh...thats brake fluid, coolant, power steering fluid, transmission fluid and engine oil and decent tires and you can go on a 2000 mile trip at any time only needing only to buy gas. My ONLY breakdown was the tranny at 164,000 miles. Keep the oil fresh and your engine will go 300,000 miles! That's regular oil change at 3,500 or synthetic at 6,000 or 8,000 IMO.

Are you serious? You really have 181k on your 2000 Acura??? That's pretty good if it still runs smoothly! Did you buy it brand new or used?

Our cars have depreciated A LOT, unless you really want a great car and dont mind spending the money, Do it...yeah, Do it! but you wont be able to trade in your car and expect something of the same quality even if you spend an extra 15Gs (used or 20Gs+ for new)

You'll get 13MAX for that car IN A PRIVATE SALE...the dealership will give you like 8000!!

Personally I wouldn't trade. You'd loose so much in depreciation, that in the end, you'll realize it would of saved you more money by maintaining the TL properly.

Man, your thinking like you own a German or American car. Its a bloody HONDA! I know cousins who have their HONDAS for over decade with almost 300k on them. These will go forever if properly miantained.

I am keeping my TL ! ...I love my baby!

it may be a frikin ford...its the loss of money and the huge amount of money needed to get the same quality with less to none miles in it.

Yes I bought it new.

To replace the tranny cost $1800, and that included an alternator and a front motor mount done at the same time. Was done by the dealer, who probably did it on his end as a warrantee job.

i bet the dud cried when he saw 400000000 on the odometer!
some people are just dumb...why hit something so old when you could just knock over an old lady and take her corola!!

Dont sell it yet, unless you're getting a sweet deal.

It's amazing that my car feels as if it hasn't aged since I bought it used with 41K on the odo. Now I'm at 91K but I want to trade it before the tranny warranty runs out. Values will drop like a rock after that, is my belief.

Plus, I want the stuff the '04/05 has to offer.

the value hasn't dropped as much as you think. 2000 w/ 65K private party will still bring 16-16.5K. Trade in a couple thousand less.

I Checked On Kkb.com And It's Going For About $13k-$14k For Dealer Trade-in And $15-$16k For A 2001 Acura 3.2tl With Around 60k-70k Miles. It Stills Does Have Value Just Not As Much As We Want It To Be!!!

Who's Planning To Keep Their Cars After 100k Miles...when The Warranty For The Transmission Expires? Or Who Is Planning To Trade It In Before They Reach 100k? Besides The Transmission Problem Our Cars Should Last Well Over 200k Miles...as Long As You Keep It Maintained!!!

Here's the kicker: the $2,000 ro $3,000+ transmission replacement has not been tied to neglect or abuse, so even cars that have been otherwise babied can be prone to this expensive failure, so either keep the car forever or trade it soon....

Its a tough call on keeping the TL past 100k or not. Especially since honda hasn't even fixed the problem, so keep in mind the tranny could go out more than once past 100k.

Hey Criswall just replaced my tranny. Did a shitty job, found battery cable in a quick survey after job was done not clamped - just dangling. Had to return next night (another tow job) with tranny failure acting up. Supposedly, reman unit had rubber seal blocking electrical connection. Truth is they never road tested after major surgery. In aviation world that's a no-no. 2003, TL Type-S 38K miles. Honda's loosing so much credibility over this one. DUMB!
