When do you change the struts?

I just picked up a 2000 TL with 45000. Just wondering if anyone changed their struts and if so when? The ride is great on the highway but a bit harsh on bumpy side roads. I just came from an SUV so I may just be used to that.

It's really hard to say. If the car has been driven on a lot of bumpy roads, carried heavy loads a lot, etc, at 45k you may very well need new shocks. There's an imperfect test you can do, which is to simulate load by pushing down hard on the corner of the car and seeing how the body reacts. It should have a quick up down motion. If it keeps shaking for a while (especially more than 2 or 3 largish motions), you need new shocks. Like I said though, this is imperfect because a Corvette like mine with heavy heavy springs and Bilstein sport shocks is obviously going to react differently than a Hyundai Accent...
