have a well known mechanic check. your parents should know many mechanics. theyll tell you the condition.

You go from having a well known mechanic looking at it to assuming every ones parents know of them. back to the mechanic telling you the condition.

If you are close to the time or age of the recomended change interval its not a bad idea to just bring it in and have it done. On our cars if it goes the motor goes.

Why? Even if you do it by the book, you replace the timing belt once every 7 years or 100,000 miles.

Why? Because under severe service, I think the interval is every 4-yrs....

Kris indicated his belt looked fine after 200,000 miles. Also, you're assuming a chain would have a longer change interval.

Sure, his may have looked fine...but I'm not willing to take such a risk. Chains are designed to last the life of the engine if oil/filter changes are performed according to the recommended intervals...

It was fine. honda wouldnt use belts if they were that prone to breaking and failure. Especially on a motor that they know will last 500k Id easily trust the belt to 200k, but thats me

I too laughed for several minutes after reading the beginning of this thread. That reminds me - I gotta call my parents!

FYI - I was at one of my referrers shops last week and he had a nice late model Jaguar with a V8 that had a broken timing chain (yes CHAIN). Sadly, it's was a 32 valve interference motor. Now it's a large 32 valve piece of scrap aluminum and steel...

I personally have seen more chains break than belts

Gee, I guess the chain in the Jag wasn't 'designed to last the life of the engine'.

Sure it was. THAT IS the end of the life of that engine - and the chain lasted all the way up to it!
