whats the 5 and the 30 in 5w30

I am about to change my oil with mobile 1 and was wondering what the 5 and the 30 is in the 5w30 and whats that best to use during winter under normal driving conditions (10w30, 10w20, 10w30, 5w30, 0w30). Does one get better gas mileage than others?

Just stick with 5W30 for all year round use. It will protect you enough even in the harshest time in winter, and provides excellent protection in warm weather. The best part is you only need to change your oil once every 8-10k miles.

Enjoy!!!

Later...

The first number indicates the viscosity of the oil in cold weather. The colder the weather, the lower the number should be. The second number indicates the viscosity of the oil at operating temperature.

Honda recommends 5w20 in our cars. But Mobil1 doesn't make 5w20 synthetic. So I use 10w30 in the summer and 5w30 in the winter, changed every 3000 miles.

The first number of a multigrade oil (ie 10W-30) stands for the viscous weight the oil is at when the car is started and the oil is unheated. The W means winter (signifying that the oil is cold). As oil warms up it becomes more viscous and that is where the second number comes up. So when a car is using 10W-30, the oil is weight 10 at startup and once the car is fully warm the oil weight has a viscosity of 30. You shouldnt notice a huge difference in mileage with any multigrade oil.

I would change the oil every 7500 if your using synthetic oil.

2001 was 5w-30 as well. Even the CL-S which is the same exact engine.

The change to 5w-20 was just to increase Honda's overall cafe MPG numbers which is important especially with the popularity of their SUV's. I ran 5w-30 in my car as well.

Not quite 100% true. Mobil 1 does make a synthetic oil designed for our cars. I've been using it for about a year now. It's Mobil 1 Synthetic 0W-20 (grey label). I got it at Checker's and also at Wal-Mart. If you go to the Mobil 1 website, it says it's specifically made for Ford and Honda automobiles that require the use of 5W-20 conventional weight oil. Check out the two sites for more info on this

Quote per website: "Mobil 1 with SuperSyn 0W20 is engineered specifically for Ford, Honda and any other vehicle where a 0W-20 or 5W-20 engine oil is recommended"

See, my whole thing is, if it's "like" 5w20, then why don't they call it 5w20? That's why I don't consider it as 5w20, although it is designed for it.

fstty -- I'm biased. When I say "our" cars, I mean '02-'03 TL-S.

Found this while reading. I don't know how useful this will be, but some aspects are worth reading (You just have to get past the marketing fluff in the beginning). Enjoy:

the only reason honda went to that oil was to try to improve gas mileage and meet/or stay below cafe standards. there is no harm in 5w30. i personally dont llike the idea of something so lo in weight 0w20-5w20, but for most normal drivers (NOT ME ) it would be ok

Yeah, I think 5w30 and 10w30 are just fine.
