What is your engine oil consumption?

At first I was using 5W20 full synthetic oil and I noticed that my engine oil consumption is close to half a quart per 3750 miles. Then I switched to regular oil 5W30 and now it seems to be about ¼ of the quart, may be even less. The car is approaching 90K miles now. How about you, I am very curious to know?

I can't remember what the recommended oil weight was for my '01 CL-S, but whatever it was, that's what I used. Mobil 1 all the way, though.
At 144,000 miles when I sold it, you could hardly see any difference on the dipstick between changes. A real rock solid engine IMO.

To your comments, it would seem logical that an engine would use less oil when using a heavier weight oil, especially if you have any appreciable ring wear, which it sounds like you do.

Sounds like time for a hardcore Seafoam treatment to get the grunge off the rings and help the engine seal better. Most Gen2s use very little oil, as in- never have to add between changes. At 90k miles your engine should just be starting to run really good.
Replace the spark plugs with NGK Iridium IX. They cost 45 bucks for the set of 6. Dont use anything else!
Read the threadin DIY on Seafoam, use a quart sized $2 can of "engine cleaner" from parts stores in the engine oil, then immeditaly change oil and filter per its instructions.
Do that- drive a few weeks and do it again- get the crud out of the engine and your
oil prob should stop
5/30 is good to use al lyear in most places- in winter if severe freezing all the time, 0w20

Also, a bunch of us are adding the full 5 quarts of Mobil 1, even though it asks for 4.7 quarts. 5 quarts fits in fine, and it give you a little extra cushion in case you are consuming some oil.

I use slightly more oil using amsoil than M1. Im right around 1/4 or less quart consumed in 7500k miles (where i usually change filter and top off) on my 10-15k oil changes.

180K, 10K intervals with M1 - sometimes add 1/4 qt. around the 8K range, but last time I didn't need to add. Solid motor!

I have just changed the plugs. Aside from oil consumption that was another not so nice surprise. All of a sudden, car started firing up harder, it took more cranking, but after that it went and pooled ok, no noticeable problems there. It was surprising in a sense that original plugs should have lasted to 100K miles.
Then I bought and installed right away, Bosch Platinum Ir Fusion. I do not know why some people insist on Japanese Iridium plugs (Denso or NGK). These Bosch plugs should be good; they are also made in Germany (rarity these days).
During the plugs change I have also noticed that middle front plug was loose for whatever reason. When I pooled it out I was able to see carbon deposits on the plug gasket, so it was apparent that it was blowing there. Was this the actual issue with firing up the engine and not the plugs in general? It could very well be.
All in all, it appears to be all good now. I will see weather or not these plugs change will reflect on the oil consumption, I doubt it will.
Since I am the first owner and I have routinely changed the oil since day one every 3750 miles it does really make me wonder what caused this oil consumption. It could be the fact that I was taking car to a stealer for the first 3 years for an oil change. Only dear god knows what they could have done. But then again, may be it is something else.
Let me know your thoughts.

The dealer probably put 4.5 qts in it and you always thought it was burning oil.

GET RID OF THE GERMAN PLUGS TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Did I say that loud enough group?

There is a very good reason only 2 brands are approved, and of those- NGK is the cheaper AND longer lasting plug. About 7 bucks each-45 for a full set
Denso wears out in 30k, the OE plugs were ngk Platinum and last good till about 60k and after that performace drops. I dont care the book say 100- read the fine print.
Or the newer version many of us like is: NGK Iridium IX
Your car will run way better on the right plugs
Plug was loaded up and loose? clean the internals big time and see what else has shaken loose on your car. Sounds like Severe Service Schedule may be in order for you.

^ He means well, he just gets a little emotional when it comes to spark plugs. The last oil change I did I ran the car 8K miles with Royal Purple 5W30 and a Mobil 1 filter. My car didn't burn a drop of oil the entire time. It was at the full mark right before I changed it. But then again I only had 75K miles at the time. (I'm at 78K+ right now).

my engine does not use any oil, in fact my oil is still full and looks almost new, I've been running on it for 3,500 miles now and my engine runs smooth and great. I may get an oil change next month. I use Mobil Clean 5000, my engine seems to run nicer with it. http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/...lean_5000.aspx

I change my oil every 5k with Mobil 1 EP 5w20 (winter) and 5w30 (summer) using 4 3/4 quarts of oil. It sits at exactly the 2nd dot on the dipstick. When it's time to change it is sitting a smidge under the 2nd dot, never needing to be replenished throughout those $5k.

I know most think that 5k is a waste, but I drive agressive, it's either very cold or very hot here in NY with a lot of humidity. My driving is mostly mixed and I it's cheap insurance. The oil always comes out about 2 shades darker than when it went in.

With my previous Integra GSR and RSX-S I always had to add 1quart between changes. The GSR had 90k and revved to 8200rpm and the RSX I had since new and revved to 8600RPM. I used amsoil with those motors to be safe. Most likely I will be switching back to amsoil at my next oil change.

2002 at 112K miles and doesn't burn any measurable amount using the dipstick as a guide. I change it every 7,500 with full synthetic Mobil 1 5W30 and K&N filter. Purrs like my wife's new kitten.

Heck my 91 Honda Accord didn't start burning oil till it had 250,000 on it. YES =250 thousand miles on it. Also it never saw a drop of Synthetic. Nothing but Castrol oil. Lived in N. Ohio where the temps. were certainly extreme also. I would expect our TL engines to not burn oil.

I can bet im even more aggressive and have all the weather you do, not to mention my car usually idles all day and my intervals are far higher. Get a sample of oil taken on your next change with a blackstone kit and pay for the TBN test. It will tell you how much life is left. With only 5k miles on it you should easily have 3-5k more miles safely with the oil. Hell the manual tells you, and the cars are set with 7500 with regular oil for the reminder.

I've been meaning to do that. I heard about that test before. I'm going to wait until after my NEXT oil change. After the winter I'm going back to Amsoil, and an Amsoil filter. I'm going to run it for 6k and have it tested. It would be nice to go 10k or more between changes especially at that price.

I should just listen to you since you drove like 300k, and idle all day, plus you are agressive and your motor was perfect and you have no issues with your current motor. So hopefully by June I'll be having that test done, and I'll post the results.

my car is at 141,000 miles now. I change with Mobil 1 5w 30 and the Mobil 1 filter every 7500 miles since I purchased the car at 58,000. Recently it seems that when I change my oil it is down about 1/2 quart max. seems fine to me - I cant imagine an engine not burning any oil over that many miles - especially with a good bit in the VTEC range!
this engine seems very solid for sure

Yes, just stopped at the local Honda dealer the other day to buy 4 oil pan and 4 trans drain washers. Amazing they charge like .30 or something for the oil but $2.40 or so for the trans washers - must be special I just tell them it's a V6 Accord (the nearest Acura dealer is 2 hours away)

My brother can relate to you, he has an 00 as well with close to 240K miles as well, it doesnt burn oil either and he changes it every 4000 miles with just regular Mobil oil.

My 02 TL-S stands at 142k miles and I have never added additional oil in between oil changes and I check it almost every fill up.

I currently use basic oil when I get my oil changed (not synthetic) and 87 octane gas. Does anyone recommend using better gas and/or oil going forward? I have 67,000 miles on the car and I want it to last, but it has to be worth it at gas prices these days. Thanks.
