as a little side project, i wanna be able to talk to my car
so what i wanna hear from you all is waht types of stuff would u have this little wonder do .. basically, I took a voice recognition module, interfaced it w/ a microprocessor and once i know what i want it to do, will write the software. obvious things are - open/close windows, doors, moonroof .. possibly add memory to the seats but that's a little complicated.. anything that can be turned on/off electronically or send out a signal already (like a light, switch, etc) is good to go .. here are some pics of this stuff in the meantime...
back of voice rec module
front of voice rec module (speaker not attached.. but this module talks to u ... like "training complete" and "memory full" and stuff.. kinda neat)
crap all over my desk
programmable microprocessor and programming module w/ some test junk like LED's and speaker attached (the radio shack bag is unrelated to this project
)

Now that's what I'm talkin' about, a man after my own heart. Gadgets are sweet. How about "pop the trunk", turn on your amps, pulse the horn, flash high beams, lock/unlock doors....man, I could use that to turn on all my tvs and sh*t!

Awesome! very good stuff. I will be following your progress.

Is that anything to do with "black Sunday"
And are you up ?

anyways.. the one down side of this of course is voice recognition fails in noisy situations.. so I dont think it will work too well w/ the radio blasting (unless i have a headset for it). But it might be cool for when the radio is off and just to impress people

Heated seats is a definite possibility .. phone is more difficult cause in order to interface with it you'd need to know the protocol for your phone

I see you have a an Accord so this doesn't apply to you, but do you thing you could get it to work with the navigation system or would you encounter the same problem as the phone.

Making your car honk when you say "F@ck Y@u" is pretty hilarious (especially as an "undocumented" feature). Power trunk release would be cool too; then again, if your windows were open someone could shout "POP TRUNK" from outside and your trunk would fly open.
Probably the most useful VR interface would be to the radio ("louder", "much louder", "shiver me timbers!!") but that's pretty tough.
If it were general enough an interface (like the aftermarket remote start/power window controllers) you could make it work for other cars. Then you could add:
Ford Explorer: "roll over"
Honda Civic: "beg"
IS300: "play dead"
Hey, have you thought of filing a patent for the concept? You don't actually have to have it working to patent an idea, and I haven't heard of any VR units for cars yet.

sweet. I order stuff from allelectronics a lot. I think it won't recognize the voice while listening to CD... you can do the cruise control or sunroof ones since the control for the sunroof is placed at a weird spot.

Hey Fiddler, try SmartHome.Com. for Home automation. It's incredible. I bet you could even use a converter to wire some in-line X-10 modules in your car, which can respond to a RF remote.

I've bought stuff from smarthome before.. in fact most of the lights in my house are remote controlled.. but i gotta say X-10 kinda sucks. Half the time, the signals aren't recognized and if they are, the response is slow. plus, X10 in a car is kinda silly considering maximum distance is like 20 feet

diplo - i'm in south edison .. right off plainfield ave
here's some info on the voice rec's capability -
it needs to be trained
it will only respond to a very close rendition of the original word (so if you said "Lights on" in training and u were relaxed, and now you've just ran a marathon and found out your girlfriend is cheating on you, your physical and emotional states will change your voice and your car will no longer understand "lights on"
)
It will not work in a lot of noise so something like "volume up" would defeat its purpose![](http://www.acura-tl.com/ubb/smile.gif)
tshields - yes the problem would be the same, of course there's a way to "hack" this since you're not using a mobile device like a cell phone - solder wires directly onto buttons u wish to simulate .. so if u have an up and down button, u can theoretically say "navi up" and "navi down" or something like that
of course, if u wanna go all out, you can just mount a computer or laptop somewhere in your car and run ViaVoice or Dragon naturally speaking with some custom code![](http://www.acura-tl.com/ubb/biggrin.gif)
i just found another great electronics site for those who are interested - www.rentron.com, i'm probably gonna order some RF transmitters/receivers.. would be cool if my house could "sense" me pulling up and turn the lights on or something w/o intervention (and off when it no longer senes me) .. (or turn lights on, open door, play music, cook dinner, turn virtual girlfriend on .. ooops i've said too much
)
so many possibilities.. so little time![](http://www.acura-tl.com/ubb/biggrin.gif)

i would seriously consider this but as you can tell, im located too far away. after you are done with prototypes, do you think it would be just a plug and play type of hardware or more complicated?

Man if that works, I'll pay you to do it for mine too. i think that you should probably have it for fog lights, sunroof, and sound system so that when someone calls it automatically decreases the stereos sound. I keep my cell right there, so for instance program it to the tune of your cell phone ringing, and then it automatically turns the music down.

I'm going to add this to the FAQ, but here it is. There are 3 modes of operation of this device. (i prefer 1 and 2)
1: Continuous Listen: - device listens all the time until it hears a command word (like "Computer!"). After the word has been set, the device goes into command mode and listens to any of the following commands (windows up, doors close, etc)
2: User input: - same as #1 except instead of listening for the initial command word, the use presses a button to make the device start listening (higher accuracy..) .. same system is employed in the S-class benz i think. their web site says you touch a "stalk" before issuing a command.
3: Continuous Listen with 3 sections. Basically there are 3 command words that enable a bank of up to 5 commands each. so for instance instead of just saying "computer!" you could have "lights", "radio" and "car" .. after any one of them, the device goes into the corresponding bank and waits for any of the 5 subsequent commands per bank.
I suppose with this mode you could set one of the command words to be your cell phone ringing, but then each other one is limited to only 5 sub-commands thereafter.
-------------------------------------
was that confusing enough for you people?![](http://www.acura-tl.com/ubb/biggrin.gif)
