What type of gas do you use?

'99 manual says 90 octane. I put in 89. I don't think 1 will make that big of a difference. Plus 93 is a bit higher in octane and price. In my mind it won't make that much of a difference.

The manual acutally saids to use at least 91 octane. Here in CA, the highest octane we have is 91 and I have never seen 93. So I use Chevron Techron 91. I don't think it matters if you put anything less as far as things breaking down, it will only effect your performance.

You can use lower octane fuel as long as the engine does not knock or ping (detonation). The engine will adjust to lower octane fuel by retarding the ignition spark and stop the knocking and pinging. The use of higher octane will allow for more ignition advance and higher performance. I have heard that some cars actually get less gas mileage from using higher octane fuel, because it doesnt burn as easily as lower octane fuel.

im runnin the supreme/premium/utlimate... usually i stick to using Exxon Supreme... the 03 manual suggests above 91or92... i forget but the high grade gas is good enough for it

You should only fill up with what the manufacture says to use. There are drawbacks to using higher or lower octane.
Higher octane is a waste of money. In order for an engine to take advantage of higher octane it needs to be able to compress the gas more than it was originally designed.
Lower octane is worse than using higher octane because it can actually cause damage. The gas will ignight as it is compressed before the spark plug fires. This causes knocking in the engine! A sure way to ruin your engine.

I've heard that they have water contents mixed with gasoline at ARCO, that's why their prices are always cheaper than others.

Using less than 91 octane gas is false economy. The computer makes adjustments in the timing to compensate for lower octane gas. This means using regular won't hurt your car but it will compromise power and mpg. You will not notice the loss of power in normal driving but if you calculate your mpg on different grades of gas(as I did) you will find you don't save any money by using regular. Please trust me on this and end this thread.

Well, my post on this topic was kinda out of the blue... But yes, getting gas has taken on a whole new meaning in the D.C. area.
Makes me want to :yack:
But back to the actual topic... I use Exxon or Mobil 93 octane...

Don't want to sound like a broken record... but you do know that Shell uses an additive which has been known to cause buildup ! I remember reading numerous articles on it on the web... I'll post if I find them again...They may have stoped using it ... I don't know for sure, but I haven't heard much lately... (this was back in 99,00 when I read this).
As to why 94... it only 2c more than 91...so on 50L fill up it only $1 more, so while I completely know it will do nothing more than the regular 91 on our cars ... its just something I do
Does any car require 94? Just curious.

well tests have been done saying that cars like accord which states that using 87 is fine, and putting in 93 isn't gonna do anything. but for cars which require / recommend to use premium, putting in 87 or 89 will only degrade the performance.
i have never put in anything less than 91 on my cars. imho if you can't shell out another 200 bucks a yr for having 91 or higher gas, you don't deserve to drive the car. that's if you think 89 is going to save you more money
