What is the TL to you?

Alright, got a 99Tl but I be getting confused on what road my car should take when it comes to modding. I know a TL is a mid sedan car that has sport/luxury mixed, so Im not a newbie at this. Sorry also if this some kind of a repost.

Is worth it to do performance at 75K, and how fast would it be with I/H/S/P/E? I read threads saying it would be faster than a STOCK type S, which is roughly 14.6 I believe? With 18's that has a 1 1/2 lip, I think it would increase the numbers, wouldn't it?

Or, cosmetic and sound modification? Custom system, redesign interior ( suede, leather seats, etc ), Multimedia and everything else?

What would yall do? and how are your TL's setup? I just want some opinions because I dont want to do. Money is of course is budgeted, so I aint a balla like that. Thanks any reply!

if u plan on keeping your car for a while its worth to put the money into doing both. if your not planning to get too crazy with the engine just do the boltons roughly around a grand in expenses for the stuff if u dont do all comptech stuff and then concentrate on ur interior. Im more performance minded and thats the route id take but then again i also have type s.

for the performance, having I/H/P/E/S should be at least as fast as a stock type S, i think it should be faster.

as the TL is also considered a a mid sedan car, our car won't run 12's unless you do some major engine work. so i think it is best to do cosmetics and sound.

My previous car was my first car and I knew that I would be stuck with it for a while. I began small modding like lowering it, wheels, intake, etc. Then as years went by ...more and more mods came on the car and then 5 years later I had successfully completed the car inside out. Went to some shows, got featured in mags and then sold it.
I then bought the TL-S completely stock. My plan was only to keep it for a few years so I kept my mods to a mininum. Factory oem kit with wing and roof wing, LED white interior lights, ion yellow fog lights, and full sound system.

Like said above, if you intend on keeping your car for a long time I guess you can go ahead and throw on some mods. Just remember the more mods you put on the car, the more attention it will draw and you will eventually need to garage the TL and purchase a daily driver car.

It also depends on YOU and your needs. If you just can't stand how slow your car is and you want bolt ons then go ahead with the bolt ons. Just remember that you have 75k and if you're covered on the tranny warranty, that will leave you with roughly 25k miles left before the warranty ends.

Considering the problems with the tranny on this car and the difficulty of swapping in a 6 speed manual in this car, if I wanted to build a car "fully decked out" , I would definitely sell the TL and get something else.

Also keep in mind that the money you spend on mods is not an investment. Down the road if you plan on parting out the car or even selling the car w/ the mods, you will not get what you paid for and sometimes not even close depending on the parts. Also, the value of your car is not $30k anymore and is dropping everyday.

This is just my opinion and if you would like my suggestion, I would just save up my money that I would spend on mods, sell the car and get something newer and faster and which will have a higher value.

My car is just that, transportation. If i have the money to stick into it i stick it into it. If it rains i drive it, if it snows i drive it. I paid for it i do as i please with it. As i would with any other car, even a ferrari. I wouldnt change a thing and it would never be a garage queen, Rain or Shine i would drive it.

It all comes down to teh owner and what THEY want

I look at the TL as being similar to the Maxima in that the Maxima designation was 4SC
Decoded means 4 door sports car V6cyl,good power, decent brakes, all around nice car- well until the brakes needed a few more feet to stop the car than the wife had remaining ooops

The major mod I would do is to upgrade the brakes on the TL.
What good is the cool looking stuff or go fast parts if your car cant stop
when some (^#*()_ cuts in your lane and stops short in front of you

See The Black Market section of the forum and look at Sponsored Sales
See vendors Mr Heel Toe and Excellerate for great upgrades on rotors and pads
go to www.racingbrake.com to learn about the technology behind brake rotors

Have fun!
TL means to me Touring Luxery and Track Legal!

My life. I've neglected those closest to me, been fired, lost my scholarship to LSU, and taken out several student loans because of my TL.

I have all those mods and my 99 is definitely faster than a stock tl-s when the tranny is having a good day. New tranny coming soon, but if I were you get the mods, who cares, live life and have fun with what you've got.

The TL is a nice car I have a 99 and it is the first car that I purchased on my own. When I first started I wanted it to go faster and got intake and headers. After a while I realized what do those matter, the TL will never be FAST without some serious money, so right now I have a OEM kit and Tein Basics on the way.

Just make sure you have money in the bank, don't spend all of your money on moding your car. Someday the tranny will go bad and you will most likely have to pay for it so make sure you have a few grand in the bank to fix it when something does go wrong.

it's not going to be one of the fastest cars on the track, but it's adequate for the streets. and with my mods, my TL-S will be fast, luxurious, and look damn good.

I have modified more cosmetic/suspension/stereo on mine, all i have for performance is an intake. Like everyone else said, the car is not that fast.. its decent but it still weights 3500 lbs. Even with a s/c and all supporting mods (at least $5k) its still in the 13's.

Like fsttyms said- its your car do what you want. i look at mine as more of a cruiser to have some fun in the twisties with here and there

Yes a cruiser that can do twisties. But even the base 3erd gen TL is pretty quick, faster than most bmw 3ers, Saab, etc
