What sort of bypass valve is this??

Hey guys, i washed my car today and later on when i was about to start it i noticed a clicking noise from the engine bay, sort of like the noise that a bad starter motor would make, the noise itself was very brief and low. I opened the hood and had my coz start the car for me, and right before you start the car, when the ignition key is at "ON" position, thats when this following part made the clickin noise for a second. When i started the car it wasnt there, tried it a few more times with the same result. It makes the sound when you turn the key to ON and when u start the car up its not there any more. The part itself says "bypass valve". I am just wondering what caused this and whats the fix. The part is located right behind the engine itself, right next to the strut tower bar.

OK this is the info that i got from the acuraparts247.com website. The part itself says " ACTR BYPASS VALVE" on it. THe part number, actually on the part itself is 17150-PFW-J01 (for an 03 TL). On the website it is listed as part number 17151-PFW-J02 as ACTR, BYPASS VALVE for $83.28 . I will call the tech at the dealership today and see what he says, if it needs to be replaced i will do so, and i suggest black you do the same. WIll keep you posted.

That would be the Intake Manifold Runner Control (IMRC) that flips at a certain RPM to switch to the secondary intake runner to match airflow for VTEC operations.

Oh, and it's also known as the Acutator Bypass Valve.

If it doesn't flip, then the intake runner would be stuck in the first stage and you would lose power.

Thanks pure, i just spoke to the tech at the local acura dealership. He said it is suppose to make that noise , and you probably never noticed it. What it does is it triggers the EGR valve, exactly what you said pure.

I dont know about good or bad, but the way the tech put it , it sure sounds like it is suppose to make that noise. I only noticed the noise cause i was outside the car and my cousin started it. After noticing it i had him restart it and thats when i noticed it again. The tech was right saying that you do not notice the noise when u are in the car.

The way to test it is to have someone rev the car up in Park to 4000rpms or more.

You'll see the Actuator flip open. If it flips open at around 4000rpms, and then flips closed as you're coming down below 4000rpms, then its working.

If its not, you should get your dealer to replace the part. Its good for about 20hp or so in the midrange.

Note: Only Type S models have the IMRC. The Premium models don't have it.

Here's a great video showing the IMRC in action:

https://acurazine.com/forums/showthr...highlight=IMRC

The link to the video in the above URL isn't working anymore. Here's the older video which isn't as good, but it still shows you what the actuator looks like in action:

No problem. It's important to make sure that it's working properly, because it's one of the main parts that makes the Type-S the Type-S.
