What is this noise and why won't it stop!?

There is a squealing or loud whistling noise coming from the front wheelwells and I was told it was the brake pads, which did need changing. Well, new brake pads are in there and the noise is STILL there! The noise isn't when I brake, it's when the car is in motion and it's continuous. When I brake, the noise actually stops...

Any ideas?

That noise is one of the symptoms of transmission failure.

What year is your car and how many miles are on it?

Really? I thought I detected the noise coming from around the tire/brake area...

My car does have 94K miles and is a 2000, on the original tranny and when it downshifts at low speeds, it very noticibly jerks. So could be the trans.?

it makes sense that it would be your tranny because you stated that the sound goes away when you brake. I find that sometimes after gunning the car, I apply the brakes and the RPM's will drop to like 1k RPM and bounce off of it. I was told this is because of the grade logic unit attempting to take virtually all strain off the tranny. So basically my point is, if the sound disappears when you apply the brakes, the grade logic unit is correcting this...however when you begin to accelerate again, the grade logic unit has no choice but to disengage, thus causing the noise to come back.

Get that checked out...

Could be wheel bearings too.
