It's important that they keep a demo in each color, because everyone knows the silver TLS can blow the doors off a black or blue one.

Seriously, most dealers probably only keep one or two demos for test drives. I would NEVER buy a car that ANYBODY else had test driven. People (myself included) tend to drive the crap out of them during a test drive, and the engine hasn't even been broken in yet. I would insist on getting one straight off the truck.

Just look for the one that is still wrapped in plastic. You'll know it hasn't been driven yet.

I'm with mikester - I like a virgin car! That way I can break it in as I see fit - no telling how hard a "demo" has been ridden.

Method suggested by Tag66 is not reliable. I test-drove two TL-S' with plastic covers (on the outside as well as inside) before buying mine.

When i picked out my car, the steering was still wrapped in plastic, as were the seats, and the entire shift gate area. I don't think a dealer would let anyone drive a car with an interior that was still completely wrapped in plastic.

I had around 12 miles on mine...at first the dealer tried to sell me a car with 90 miles on it. Pretty sick. I would not consider anything above the teens.

PS -- My interior was wrapped as well.

I agree, low mileage cars make me feel better (12 or so). The TL-S seem to arrive with about 4 miles from the factory, then another 6-7 miles from the dealer for road test and filling the gas tank. So 25 miles and it has been test driven.

I was lucky to get my car off the truck. I got the car w/ 2 miles on it. I received my car within 24 hours. My dealer said that it was the quickest deal he has ever made.

When I went to make a deal. They only had one w/navi, and it just came off the truck. I told him I wanted to inspect it before they got it ready for me. We went into the service bay, and it still had the plastic all over it, and the interior was still wrapped in plastic also. I turned the key and it had 5 miles on it. After they prepped it and filled it up, it had 10 miles on it. Lowest mile car I've bought new.

I had 6 miles on mine.

Legally speaking, a car is considered "new" as long as it has never been titled (the service guy at my dealer told me this while fixing hail damage on a "new" car).

Do not accept a "new" car with more than 10 miles on it. Be sure you tell your salesman that you will not take delivery of a car with any more miles, and then stick to it. You may have to wait several weeks for a new delivery to arrive, but you'd kick yourself if you ever got a car that has been abused in its first few miles.

Not always true, my girlfriend's car was completely covered in plastic and it had 70 miles on it.

Cool

As a buyer, when you make your deal, you have the right to specify your definition of a new car.
In '97, I was shopping for a Maxima (yes, I know sacrilage!). I wanted MY new car (meaning off the truck) with 12 mile or less.
I saw the car on the big day and it had 80 miles on it. I refused delivery because I knew the dealer was having "car jockeys" drive them up from the shoreline region of the State. 40-50 highway miles away. The salesman admitted this to me during our negotiations but I acted as though I didn't care.
Later that evening, I got a call from the president of the dealership who insisted I take delivery. I told him not a chance and that he should read my sales contract where I specified the mileage limitation. I never went back to that dealership - went and bought my first Acura.

Mine had 2 miles on it at its original dealership (Newport, RI). Because I bought from Canton, CT they had to drive it up (tried to get them to truck it, but no dice). I've always been paranoid about "car jockeys" because usually it's a kid making minimum wage, having fun with someone else's expensive car. I've knew someone that found a McDonald's wrapper under his seat when he went to pick up his "new" car. This time though, I actually met the guy who drove my car up--in his 40's and very nice. I could tell he cared about the cars and he knew about varying RPMs on the new engine, etc. Car had 120 miles when I actually took possession of it (118 of it was the commute). If the dealer near you doesn't have the color/nav combo you want, you may not have a choice about low miles. They gotta get it there somehow and the days of trucking between dealerships is long since passed.

When I bought my car I was super lucky. I acutally wanted a different color, and I bought it at a time when the cars were selling like hot cakes (I know they still are, but there was a time when it was somewhat worse). So anyways, the dealer told me to come in cause he had the color I wanted in stock, with Nav. When I got there he told me he made a mistake, but just got 2 cars off the truck, and that I should go in the back and look. The cars had JUST come off the truck... and were completely wrapped in plastic. I took delivery of the car with 8 miles. The title said 10 miles, but I figured they cover themselves in case they have to drive it somewhere for gas or whatever.

I still can't believe how perfect my timing was that day. Ironically this was a year ago yesterday.

When I bought mine, I had been negotiating for a couple of days and I called the dealer one morning and accepted the deal. He said he had a silver one that just came in. I went by that day and checked it out - I wanted to check for uneven tailpipes, etc. before I accepted it. When I saw it, it still had most of the plastic on it and was outside the service bay waiting to be prepped. I checked and it had 4 miles on it.

When I picked it up, it had 16 miles on it. That is because I had the windows tinted, and the dealer doesn't do that onsite.

Anyway, my point is, the 10 miles people are talking about isn't always an exact number. Use your common sense, especially if you have extras added like window tinting or an alarm system, which are often done somewhere besides the dealership.

Post What is the Maximum Mileage on A Brand New Car?

This is the first time I am buying a brand new car, so wondering, how many miles can there be on a brand new car (due to test drives) before it qualifies for a demo model? In other words, if I go to the dealer and he actually keeps one car for each color for test drives and he tries to sell me that one since he sees that I am a newbie, how do I determine if the mileage is too much?.. Also how does the test drive milieage affect the car's performance later, since the test drivers don't care about being careful with breaking in the engine? Thanks for all the opinions..

Personally, I would wait for a new car off the truck. When I picked my TL-S, it had 7 miles on it.
My girlfriend just bought a 01 Corolla with 150 miles on it and the dealer considered that "new." Well, here's the kicker, we could not get the car registered and turns out that it was a repo. What a nightmare! Anyway, we finally got another off their lot with 70 miles on it and that was still considered new.
The point is, if you are buying a new car, it should not have more than 15-20 miles on it.

I had 11 on mine when I picked it up and it was ordered and just off the truck. I've seen in other posts that the TL-S' have been averaging between 5-10 miles when picked up.

When I took delivery of my 2000 TL it had 10 miles on it. When they called me to say the car had come in on the truck it was the night before Christmas Eve. I told them that I could not pick the car up until after Christmas & that fell on a Saturday. I went out to look at the car that Sunday but I could not get my paperwork from my credit union until that Monday. On Sunday the car had 6 miles on it they had installed most of my add-ons. This was CD-Changer,spoiler gold tips, visor the rest of the stuff was on back order. They probaly did all that stuff on Christmas Eve. On Tuesday when I got the car it had 10 miles. So with the service checks they put 4 miles on it.

Mine was wrapped in plastic and only had 9 miles on it AFTER I took it for a spin! I know that I was the only one who drove the car, besides the dealer.

THe dealership in Costa Mesa, California was trying to sell me one that had 150 miles on it! He said that he had to pick it up at another dealer. Yuck! Glad I passed up.
