what the hell was wrong with my tires

i know i am on stock tires, so they suck time big to begin with already... but for some odd reasons my tires spin much more now.... i have had the car for 4 months and 5600 miles on it. before this week my car was fine, the tires only spined when i floored or made hard turns. but today (yes, in one day), the tires spined 3 times already. and i swear i wasn't making hard turns at all...

1) turning right into a parking lot at around 20mph, spin...
2) turning right into a ramp at 20mph, spin.....
3) going off ramp at 50mph (i used to do 60mph), almost tail spinned my car....

what could be wrong? i checked my tires and there are still plenty of rubbers.... could it be the whether getting cooler? but being in san jose it shouldn't make that much of a diff right?

Dang. What are you complaining about. I am on my third set of sh*tty Michelins. Had a 5th Gen Accord, traded to a 6th Gen Accord and now the CL-S....

The sad thing is that Michelin does not realise that by making such crappy tires to put on Honda/Acuras actually hurts them in the long run. Nobody buys replacement Michelins but swears away from them forever..

Check your tires for bald spots and uneven wear. I've also heard that these Michelins get progressively worse the longer you use them, even when there's still usable tread left.

Dunlops are on my next Chirstmas list!

rominl!

I know what you mean about the tires. My stock tires do it all the time, and my brother says his stock tires used to do the same, but now he has new shoes so it's cool.

I believe our tires are terrible. I want new shoes!!!

I started out with Goodyear Eagle GTs on my previous car and loved them. Had them rotated, balanced and alignment checked every 5000 miles. Never got much over 35K miles out of them, but boy were they responsive on dry pavement. Not bad on wet roads either. Switched to Yokohamas - didn't really like them; when they wore out at about 35K miles I switched back to Eagles.

The ride on the Goodyear Eagles was a little rough, but that was a small price to pay for the handling. Does Goodyear make Eagle GTs (or even the LS for that matter) for the TL S? If so, does anybody have them - how do you like them? I intend to switch tires once these Michelins wear out.

Have you checked your tire pressure lately? Could be over or under inflated.

The sways will help big time on the cornering. My first mod was new shoes however. With both, it'll be you that is sliding, not the car

my car could be under inflated (been 3 weeks since last air) but shouldn't under inflated help grip and prevent the car from sliding?

i am definitely dumb on tires. believe me i have read over almost all tires thread, but i still can't get the picture on what are the good tires to get. cam someone enlighten me and give me couple of choices on good shoes? no need to be specific, but some choices so i can do some more research.

thanks for the great help guys.

Just a word of advice -- buy the "tire" not the brand. I think every maker has a good tire and a not-so-good one.

For example -- you like the Goodyear Eagle GTs, but didn't like the Yokohamas. In the case of my wife's car, she had Goodyear Eagle RS-As (109 bucks a pop) and they got replaced with Yoko AVS dBs ($63 each from TireRack). The Yokohama AVS dBs are quieter (on all surfaces), ride much better, stick far better in the wet and dry, steering feels great, and they don't squeal (even on the smooth pavement of her parking garage at work). As a note – the Goodyear Eagle RSAs screamed like pigs from day one and just got worse. The traction in the wet was scary!

Moral of the story -- buy the tire, not the "brand"

Those Yoko DBs are very intriguing! I'm all for reducing road noise and improving handling. And $63 a corner isn't bad at all.

I agree, EricL. However, a particular tire in a 16" might handle completely differently in a 17". I was kind of hoping someone had actually tried this tire on their Type S.

BTW, have you replaced the tires on your Acura yet? If so, what did you go with and how do you like them?

Thanks for your input.

I agree with others about the OE Michelin's. They're nice if you want to tour the country on the highway. But other than that, pass.

I really think Kumho ECSTA Supra 712's are the way to go (from what I've read from others.) This so far is my number 1 pick for summer tires. At $100 each from tirerack, you can't beat the price either.

From what I've read on CL.com, you can fit 235/45/17's on stock CLS 7" wheels without problems. TLS probably won't fit, as they're 6.5" wheels.

Anyone know of anyone who's had a bad experience with 235's on a 7" wheel? I really want to investigate this a ton more before making my decission.

TIA - Jim

1. Not only is there the possibility of different sizes performing differently (RE: your comment about 16” vs. 17”), but certain tires will perform differently on different cars (load, camber, change in camber, toe-in, other suspension parameters with suspension travel, loading, and weight transfer).

The AVS dBs were bought in a 205/15-60 for a 1995 Altima. There are people over on the CLS forum that purchased them for their CLS. IMO -- they are very good tires, but they are not as sticky as MAX performance tires (S-03, Toyo T1S, etc). They are a dramatic improvement over the Eagle GSAs (on this car, etc).

I replaced the stock MXM4s on my CLS right away and put on Toyo T1S Proxies in 235/45ZR17-97W* (The "*" denotes an XL rating). They got mounted on the stock CLS 17x7" +55 offset wheels. I am quite happy with them and will buy some more if they still make them. I have doubts about fitting Toyos in a 235 on 17x6.5" wide (TLS/USA) wheels. The Toyo T1s fit perfectly on the CLS wheels. (As a note, the rim protector is very thick on the Toyos. This helps to protect the wheels from scratching, but also makes alignments very difficult to do without scratching the STOCK wheel's clear coat!)

BTW -- all wheel flanges are not created equal...

You also will probably want to ask people if they have had the 235/45-17 tires aligned on the stock wheels!

As a note -- the decision to go with a 225/45 or 235/45 not only will be influenced by the tire make, but by any wheel upgrades. If you are going to upgrade to a lightweight or different wheel in a wider width, 235s fit nicely on 7.5" and wider wheels. (Note: I'm not getting into rubbing issues with width and offset as that is a whole different issue.)

As stated on a thread on CL.com http://www.acura-cl.com/forums/showt...threadid=53571 I'm not worried about alignment issues. I've got 16" TLP OE wheels / tires for that.

I'm asking specifically about 235/45/17 Kumho ECSTA Supra 712's on OE Acura CLS wheels. No aftermarket wheels in the near future planned.

I'm going on 6400 miles and my tires do not make a peep unless I floor it off the line or something. Now granted I'm not tearing into many corners either, but I take some tight turns at decent speeds and they're quiet. Have you checked your air pressure? If it's too low that may make them chirp a little. Once I get married and into a house I'll get good tires (and rims) for summer and snows for winter......

I have already looked at the specs on the Kumhos...

While I haven't done it (with the Kuhmos), if you can fit S-03s, S-02s, and Toyos on the stock wheels (which are wider), you can fit the Kumhos -- they are not as wide, so you should be fine. You also might want to consider the weight of the 235 vs. the 225...

for 235/45-17 (See Tire Rack)
Toyo Section width -> 9.4" Tread width ?? weight 23.8lbs (4 or more members tested on stock rim)
S0-3 Section width -> 9.4" Tread width 8.7" weight ?? (2 or more CLS members tested with stock rim)
712 Section width -> 9.3" Tread width 8.5" weight 27.3lbs (??? -- for some reason, everyone so far seems to be getting 225/45-17. At least the 225s weight the same as the stock tires, not more. )

The stock tires are quiet and corner ok on "rough"/"sandpaper" like surfaces. Try doing some hard cornering on some brand new blacktop (pavement), and mine would squeal like crazy.

At 35PSI not only would they chirp, but would scream and complain around ALL the turns in my local hills.

It is probably a matter of local road conditions and surfaces and driving style.

As a note -- both the Yoko AVS dBs and the Toyos will only make some noise on a paint strip (under WOT/VSA-off). They don't scream even at the point where most passengers would toss their cookies!

heh, u think your tires are sh1tty, i peeled out three times today on my way to school in my daily driver, a 96 corolla and u know how underpowered those things are. on the tls, im sticking with the dealer recommended 32 psi, and havent had much squealing there, but then again, its only got 2k miles on them. if it means that much to u, then go for the yoko's, theyre worth it
