Jammers are illegal in many states. However, it's not illegal to transmit in the infrared range (FCC doesn't regulate that spectrum), so I don't know how enforcable the jammer laws are.

Have you guys heard of Bel radar detectors? Are they any good? Are the latest models of the cobra radar detectors any good? Im talking about the one that is silver and has the digital compass on it. What is the best that is not expenisive? around 150 bucks.

Just like it's not illegal to shoot a handgun at a beer can, it is illegal to shoot a handgun at a police officer.
Forget about the laser jammers....IMO.

IMHO, detectors have improved greatly over the past decade and a half. Even the cheapies will offer good protection, and the good ones ($300+) will be even better.
If you've never ran with a detector before, here are some pointers:
- don't get too cocky, they're only an extra measure and you still have to use common sense
- instant on laser or radar can always beat a detector
- X band will give lots of false alarms around the city (motion detectors, security systems, automatic door openers like at supermarkets, etc.)
If your state and city is like mine (texas), the cops use k band perhaps 99% of the time, and K band does not offer false alarms that I have seen in many years of detector use. I pretty much ignore the X band beep (different sound) unless on a roadtrip going through a little town that might be using X.
My cheapie $99 detector works great, giving well over a mile or so warning on K band. detectors boasting 360 degree protection only offer laser (worthless) to the rear, so don't get too excited. Only the $400 Valentine 1 ("V1") offers true radar andf laser front and rear.
If I had to do it all again, I'd buy a V1 or Passport x500, and most likely the 8500 or 7500 as these can be programmed to mute all X band alerts. As it is, I often ignore the detector due to the false alarms on X around town, and the different sound of the K alerts sometimes gets tuned out by my tired brain.
If you plan on major hauling of ass get the V1, otherwise you'll be fine with a cheapie. I do strongly suggest a Passport 7500 or 8500 if your area does not use X band, and also recommend hard wiring your detector to the fuse box for convenience.
Hope this helps!
