What do you look for in headers?

Well I may start making headers (I AM NOT ADVERTISING THEM ... JUST SSEEING WHAT PEOPLE WANT)

Aside from the fact that everyone wants the fitment of comptech headers, what else do you look for?

Polished or flat finish?
Looks?
I know the tig welding and finish/lining up of the piping inside matters a lot (see alphawerks problems)

also any interest in tubular headers

I totally agree. I wish there was an affordable CARB cert header on the market. I like the Comptech headers, but they're priced too high for me.

You could always try and design your own headers, I'd love to see the gains from equal length headers like the ones Prototype Racing were trying to develop:

http://www.prototyperacing.com/tlcl.htm

Some more info on them here: http://www.prototyperacing.com/headinf.htm

CARB certification, headers that come with Jet-Hot or similar coating so they don't turn color so quickly, perfect fitment, a good warranty incase they dont fit (offering a refund on installation costs if the headers dont fit the first time would be sweet), and of course a price thats lower than brand new Comptechs.

Here's a dyno of said equal length headers on an Accord v6... Pretty impressive gains in hp and torque in the midrange. Losses at the top end aren't that bad either.

i figured as much

I know the whole warryntyt thing .. thats part of customer service .. ive got that down pat

But like i said .. a set of tubular headers or equal length headers are going to be a possibility

But as of right now im shooting for an opening price of 200-300 dollars (presale of course .. they will def go up after that)

How would I go abotu getting CARB certified ?

You prob have to submit a prototype of the headers to the CARB board for testing and stuff. It'll prob cost a hefty sum to have them test it.

Try contacting them: CARB Contacts

Something tells me it involves a lot of money and paperwork and you probably will not have enough sales over which to spread the cost. Might be a partial explanation why CompTech prices are higher.

I'd recommend also posting this on the V6 Accord boards (not sure which ones, maybe www.v6performance.net ?) and posting it up on the Acura-CL boards too. Cover as much of your market as possible

Now you know. That and the fact they came out with the design first and everyone else just made very poor copies of it.

Always helps when you can get another company to do the hard, expensive work, doesn't it.

What do I look for?

The Comptech logo stamped on the front manifold. I know they will fit, I know the welds won't crack, I know I won't have resonance issues, I know they will last the life of my car, and I know i'll be able to sell them for $600+ whenever I decide to move on from the CL-S. PERIOD.

u guys all forgot about the main reason for headers. BEST HP GAIN!!

also those prototype headers dont think would be good if ur racing because after 1st gear, ur usually all up in higher rpm range which is where it is loosing hp.

It depends where you want the gains. Some people might want the gains for another reason... I know the TL/CL aren't exactly AutoX cars, but in some instances you're not always above 5800rpms which is where the losses start. Not to mention the dyno will look different on a J32A1 and J32A2. I'm pretty sure 5800rpms is above your shift point most of the time too, so you'd still see gains when racing.

A 3whp loss (3hp loss from the Comptech headers) from 5800-7000rpms wouldn't be too terrible for some extra gains (up to 10whp in the midrange above Comptech).

Thats the thing you've got to remember, the top end gains are lower than Comptech but they're still gains. The extra gains in the midrange are above and beyond the Comptech headers ...

But if you just want Comptech headers, they're already available. If HurleySurf wants to differentiate, he'd need to design something different than the Comptech headers.
