What do you all know about these pads?

Because of most of you who are such strong advocates of the Rotora rotors, I placed an order for a set of fronts this morning (from Modacar.com) and can't wait for their arrival. I decided to leave the rears stock since they are only a few thousand miles old and don't see as much wear as the fronts. I was wondering what your opinions are of Akebono ceramic pads. I decided to go with ceramic based on the sales guy's pitch (tirerack). Ceramic is claimed to produce less heat, less noise and produce less brake dusting on rims. Just want to know if any of you guys out there have tried ceramic pads. From most of the posts I've read, Hawks, EBC seem to be the most popular.

I don't personally have any expierence with the Akebono, but I can say that EBC Greenstuff pads are what I would recomend. I use them, and love them.

ebc Green Stuff is the only way to go. axxis suck! (and this is from personal experiance) the factory pads are better than the axxis.

Have to agree, I once listened to the "experts", and had to change them.

Can't go wrong with EBC Green Stuff.

i've heard that EBC squeak......is that true? it's my first choice so far when i replace mine (acura replaced all 4 pads a few months ago free of charge....)....told them they were vibrating.....

Mine don't ever seem to squeak, but I guess I am only 1 person, so it is possible.

You can also look into Hawk pads! For me, it was between Hawk and EBC. Both are supposed to be great pads!

I was trying to stay within a reasonable price range. I paid $57 for the Akebono's and I felt that was a bit too much for me. Call me a cheap bastard if you will but everyone's got a breaking point. I can't see myself paying more than $60 for pads. I'm hoping these will a big jump from OE pads in performance and longevity.

Good pads wear quickly, you either get long lasting or good stoping, not both.

On www.modacar.com they were $142/pair plus 25 bucks shipping. Correct me if I'm wrong, I believe it's actually less expensive than ordering directly from Rotora's own website... $159/pair?

I have Akebono pads/Rotora rotor setup for my car and it's fine. More bite than stock. Break dust is comparable to stock. No squeal at all. For the first 2 to 3 weeks, I can smell the brake after driving home during rush hour. But now, they're fine and odorless. I would buy the same combo again.

I had a pair of hawk hps, just got new pads and was thinking of getting green stuffs, but the reviews on tirerack.com talked a lot about squeaking with the ebc green stuffs, so I went with the hawk hps again.

the hawks do leave a lot of brake dust, however that could be my laziness in washing my wheels...

Just got the pads from UPS man yesterday and I'm now just waiting for the rotors. How many of you changed the rotors and pads yourself? I'm considering do the work myself and saving the labor costs. What's the difficulty level?

It's very easy. Two bolts and the caliper comes off. You can change the pads. Two more bolts and then take the bracket off. Take the two phillip screws off and the rotor comes out. Total time for front brakes should run about 1 to 1.5 hours.

Cool, that will be my weekend project, that's if I receive my rotors by tomorrow. Thanks for the tips from everyone. I'm also curious for those who have EBC or Hawks, about how long, or how many miles you guys put on them before you have to change to new pads?

this varies by ur driving habits

some ppl can drive 100000 miles without replacing pads/rotors

some ppl can burn them out in 20000 miles

That's all true. I just wanted to see if anyone kept track of their pads who had EBC or Hawk. This question is in relation to the comment from dands99tl.

I have about 35k through a set on my CRX, that's about as much as they will last on that car. The TL, I have only had since Feb of this year, so not too many miles yet. I would guess they will last 40-50k though. It really depends on your driving style.

The reason I say that is because of the compound brakes are made out of, they are designed to be real grabby and thus they wear quickly, or last long, harder compound causes them to be less grabby.

I think the Green Stuff are just the right amount of both. Of course if you were racing, I would say go with the Red Stuff pads.

I do agree with you, but be aware that putting the red stuff pads on any rotor will eat away at it a lot faster than the greenstuff pads. The red stuff pads are formulated to run a few hundred degrees hotter than the greenstuff...a lot of rotors will have trouble being able to sustain that much heat abuse.

If you're gonna be racing your car with red stuff pads on there, be warned that your rotors will last about 30-40% less than if you stick with greenstuff pads. I would say, unless you visit the track every weekend, the greenstuff pads will do just fine. They're meant to take the abuse, and I've taken my car to the track with the greenstuff's on, and they perform great. The hotter they get, the more they like to grab. More than 10 stops from 170 km/h, and they still grab like no tomorrow!!! EBC's are just amazing!!!!

I did it a few times with help, well mostly watched. But I'm pretty good with tools so I don't think I'll have that much difficulty. My only hesitation is that these pads and rotors are meant to save my life everytime I press the brake pedal. Just a scary thought if I mess anything up.

Bought my pads from www.tirerack.com . I've bought stuff from them before and have always been treated nicely. Got my pads two days after ordering them.

I know Acura recommends ceramic pads for the 2000 TL. Will green stuff (Kevlar compound) cause any problems, especially since I still have stock rotors?

I wouldn't recommend stock rotor with EBC pads. You'll warp the rotor even quicker due to the higher operating temp.

I've had both EBC Green and Hawk HPS on my 6th gen Accord.

I got about 25k from the EBC pads, and the EBC 's made a lot of break dust on the rims, very dark as well.

I switched the second time to Hawk pads they bite much better IMO, and have about 50% less dust then the EBC pads, plus the Hawk dust is less black more grey in color which is good for my grey wheels.

I have no clue if the milage will be better, but the pads were a tad cheaper then EBC's and they have less dust which is a big winner in my book. Both the EBC and Hawk pads have a squeak the first stop or two but it's gone after that.

As for changing pads, I simply loosen the bolts per honda's directions and use my spreader tools to push the pistons back in. I can change a set of front pads in about 15mins. Rears need an additional 20min-to half hour. But it's pretty easy.
