What could cause engine "stutter" from 2k to 3k?
My motor kind of stutters under LIGHT acceleration from about 2k to 3k RPMs. I have 136k on an 02 type S. Plugs were replaced at 110K, seafoamed twice in the last 40K, etc. I rag on my car alot, but I keep it pretty well maintained. Any ideas? I ran some more seafoam thru the fuel, but I don't think it helped any.

- Vacum leak
- Fuel
- Ignition
For a vacum leak visually check items such as hoses, EGR valve and the like. A spray bottle to mist hoses can help. If you spray a hose or connector and the engine responds and stumbes chances are it is sucking air there.
For fuel check the injectors. Connections hoses and the like.
For igntion, wires and coil(s). In an older car once I had a bad plug wire that had this same symptom. Newer models have direct coils which are more reliable but still could cause this symptom on failure or with a bad connection. Take a look at the plugs for fouling.
You might also check the OBD-2 system and see if any code(s) have been stored that may point to a solution.

That is hard to say for sure because there are so many things that might cause it. Three broad areas to check are:
- Vacum leak
- Fuel
- Ignition

Thanks, bro. Very informative. I know its hard to diagnose these problems from a brief typed description, but you gave me some good things to check. Time to pop the hood again.

Hopefully this isn't it, but that is sort of what my car did when my tranny started to go. Under light acceleration (didn't notice it any other time), between 20 and 30 mph, it would give a quick shutter. I also noticed that when holding a steady speed of about 30 mph, the RPMs would jump around a little, maybe up/down 200 rpms. My gas mileage also went to pot.
Maybe take it to the dealer and get them to see if there are any transmission codes getting thrown?
