well first off look at getting a class D mono block amp, its the best for subs, nothing but 1 channel and all power. next you need to know what sub you have, and what your max power and rms power is! then you choose the amp that will power it that way.
also consider that if your sub is 500w rms (rms is continous or roughly 1000 max also rms is more accurate of a measurement of power ) and you got an amp that does 500w rms then your amp is working 100% to power your sub.

mine personal opinion is a jl audio 500/1 or a 1000/1
i have a 500/1 and i have powered a 12" type R alpine(amazingly loud)
and now i am running 2 kicker comp VR 10"(400W rms each) and its pretty loud too.

Another option...

Get a six channel amp, put out a few extra bucks for quality, you won't regret it!!

Bridge two of the channels to your sub and use the other four channels for your mids and twets. If you just power up your bass it will overpower everything else...if all you want is "bump" go for it, if you want SQ as well, increase power to everything

Thanks for the advice. So for one sub, does it only require a one channel or two?

You can get a mono amp or a two channel and bridge it. If you are going for power, get a Class D mono amp. I prefer sound quality opposed to sound quantity. I'm about to install my Infinity perfect components that I bought almost 8 years ago for $600 and have yet to be placed in any vehicle. I'll probably add a 10" perfect sub and either a JL 500/1 or an Infinity amp.

If you are going to keep it one sub, then of course get a D class mono amp, for best output and results. However, if you feel you would want to add a additional subwoofer later down the road but keep the same amp, then a two channel doesn't hurt. If you get a two channel amp, then you would have to research to see whats the output is when its bridged and when its not. Always get a amp that gives you close to the power the sub needs for maximum performance. For example, ( My past system ) 2 12" Kicker CVX = 400RMS each, I had a 2 channel amp giving them about 350 - 375RMS to each sub. When you bridge becames a mono amp, you obviously give more power out. However you can find amps that when bridged give alot of power but when shared ( 2 channel ), they also give enough power to pump both subwoofers enough. Understand? Simple format: RESEARCH different brands and pricing and come to a final decision, do it now to save money in the future. Good Luck

P:S They are many other options you can take, however its up to you and your financial situation!
