Went Synthetic today at 650 miles
Well, I read every post and article I could find before doing this, hope it was okay.
It was a little after 8 this morning when I got to the dealer for my first oil change. I had my jug of 5-30 Mobile 1 (blue cap) from Wal-mart and my oversized STP filter. There were 4 service people in the bay where you pull in, cause it was early I guess, and one of them leaned in the car to call out the mileage to the other and when he said 650 you could have heard a pin drop. For about 5 seconds there was nothing but silence, they were all looking back and forth at each other. Then everyone at once came out with their opinions. 'WHY?, It's not recommended, it has special 'stuff' in the oil you need to leave it in there for at least 2000 miles, it's not even 5-20 oil, it calls for 5-20' and what not. They tried real hard to talk me out of it, but said all along they would do whatever I wanted. Finally, they backed down and said it's just that an oil change isn't really needed this soon. They begged me, literally, to use their Honda filter, 'it doesn't drain when you turn the engine off'. Despite having mine, I relented and said they could use their Honda filter. So everyones happy. I got my synthetic in the motor, hopefully not before break-in was over, and they got to use a 'better filter'. I'm sure when I drove off they all thought I was freakin nuts. What do you all think?

I think it's pretty pointless to throw away that new oil since you get it free with the car. Plus it might have additives that condition the new engine, who knows? Better safe than sorry. I kept my original oil in the car for 2500 miles and followed all break-in rules. Switched to synthetic after that. Just today, in fact, I changed my oil in my garage. I put in Mobil 1 5w30 with a Mobil 1 M105 oversized filter. Well anyways, after doing all this, I get 33+ MPG on the highway and about 24 on the city. Also, my only run at the track was a 14.71 @ 96.3 MPH (bone stock) so I must have done something right to my car. The switch to synthetic was definitely a wise move though.

You really should have waited. The oil put in by the factory should be left in until the first scheduled oil change so the the engine parts seat correctly.
Going to synthetic at your first recommended change interval shouldn't be a problem. But, changing at 650 may end up doing more harm than good.

BUNK! BUNK! BUNK! I'll post links to acurate info tonight.
The worst thing that could hae happened is that the rings' tapers arnt completly worn down(not likely at 650 though)
And the best (which i think is the case here) is that the metal tainted oil(fact) was removed.
evenif the rings arnt comp, worn yet they'll still wear down to a flat smooth surface, just a bit slower than w/ break=in

Thanks, I researched and read quite a bit before doing this and was pretty confident I was okay in proceeding. Your articles back up what I found too. Looking forward to a couple 100k miles worth of fun and enjoyment.

after building many engines and such and honda too says 3000 miles it simply doesnt hurt to break it in to 3k with regular oil.

What - because it's in writing on a web page makes it fact or good science???
If you're going to post backup information to prove a point, post it from a credible source - not a geocities freebie web site...

BTW - articles about oil management in racing engines have absolutely nothing in common with our cars' street engines. Racing engines are designed to go a max of 500 miles and be torn down for inspection. They use much higher weight oils than street cars - and "break in" is not something they have the luxury of doing.

It's always best to do what the manual says. Why would they bother putting it in the book if it didn't matter?
The way I figure is that if they tell you to leave it in there, there must be a damn good reason.

I agree with the masses... I definitely would have waited. I changed mine at 4200, which is 500 over the recommended 3750 for the first oil change. You should have at least waited for 3k before switching.... the manual and dealers tell you to leave it in that long for a reason....
