Weird jerking when in idle

I find that when I come to a complete stop at a stop sign or a traffic light, I sometimes feel a small jerk in the car, as if someone just rear-ended me, but very very lightly. And it's only when the car is in D5 (or other Drive gears), and I'm totally stopped.

Anyone know what this is? and does anyone have this too?

Keep in mind the car has done this since Day 1. The only reason I haven't dealt with it, is because it doesn't seem to be a major issue.

I get it once in a while too. I don't know what it is... but my old car did the same.

Mine does it too I was told it has something to do with the AC being on. It's nothing to stress about, normal from what I hear.

That's exactly it... on these cars, when the A/C compressor is on, you will feel it lurch forward. As soon as the compressor turns on is when it lurches... if the compressor is not on.. it won't lurch. This is normal for our cars and there's nothing you can do except be aware of it....

My car does this, too, whether the A/C is on or off. It's actually the torque converter, not the A/C compressor.

I lost count how many times I had to look back to make sure I wasn't rear-ended. God damn housewives in BMW's and Mercedes' in my town don't know how to drive and always get real close, making me think that I just got bumped.

yah and sometimes with me it's more noticeable then some other times. When I'm listening to music pretty loud, and the bass is going, it's hard to tell if the subwoofer shook the car, or if it's that jerking problem.

When the music is off though, I generally can tell when it happens...

Whatever I guess a car can't be perfect!!!

I had that problem.....it seemd to go away on its own or lessened in severity after I hit 7K miles ( I think around there)....I still ehar the compressor when it kicks in, but no more lurching...at least not that I can notice.

I really don't think it's a major issue, though.

I get this from time to time too... I asked the dealership and they said it was the brakes sometimes the abs releases and reclamps when you are at a full stop. The car moves so minimally, so I thought nothing of it...

It's impossible that the ABS would have anything to do with this since you're not locking the wheel at a complete stop.

I hate when the dealers make up a bull sh*t excuse instead of actually trying to cure the problem...

If you're car is doing it with the A/C off, then you need to bring your car in for service, b/c it is, for a fact, the A/C compressor that causes this. My car does not move when the compressor is not on. In addition, Park Ave Acura techs confirmed it was the compressor back when people started asking this question about 2 years ago (when the 2001 CL came out).

In addition, the torque convertor lock and unlocks at certain RPMs and certain speeds to conserve gas. If your torque convertor is locking/unlocking at idle... your car needs to be looked at ASAP.

Below excerpt taken from: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/torque-converter1.htm
" If the engine is turning slowly, such as when the car is idling at a stoplight, the amount of torque passed through the torque converter is very small, so keeping the car still requires only a light pressure on the brake pedal."

I have the same issue and I have to agree that it is the a/c, a car at this level should have all those gremlins fixed by now but hopefully it will be taking care of with the '04 model, mine is '03 TL-S and I was going to ask the dealer about it (only 2200 miles) but since I hear all this from all of you then it must be somewhat normal for our cars.

What, the V8? It's rated at estimated 350hp and 380lb-ft of torque.

345.7ci/5665cc, 90-degree V8.... looks like someone's copying Chevy (the *350* V8 is the exact displacement, down to the tenth of a cubic inch... I still win )

nissan have been making one of the best V8's around, 1990=Q45 4.5 280hp/300tq (back then thats a corvette number minus 1.2L displcement), 2002 M45 4.5 340hp/333tq, if it was intended for a sport car it will be more like 400hp (ex. altima 3.5 and 350Z, same engine different application).
who is winning now?:p

Q45 - Of course, the price was a Corvette number minus "American icon" statute. :p

M45 - Nice engine, I'll give you that.

"IF" it was intended for a sports car, which it isn't. And why are you listing the Altima as a sports car? That's not a sports car.

Ok, ok. So Nissan is doing pretty well in the engine department. G35 coupe, cranking out nearly identical number as the Ford 4.6L V8. But I don't have a Nissan or a Ford, so I don't give a ****.

i didnt list Altima as a sports car, nice ciphertext ->****,
did you use 128bit encryption for that and what does it mean?
