weird idle issue

So, i just bought a 2002 tl-s (from a chevy dealer no less)...love it so far, but just started having an issue...sitting at a stop light (in D5), the engine revs erratically from about 500-1200...at one point it dropped down to near zero, then popped back up...the first time it did this the engine was cold...the second time the engine was warm...registered my vin...tranny was replaced in 04...though this doesnt really match the symptoms of tranny failure that i've read on these forums. could it be dirty fuel injectors, fuel filter, or even bad gas? (not the taco bell kind...) Much thanks to anyone who has any suggestions.... Id hate to be sitting on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck when i still have 30day tags on my car.

I apologize if this has been answered before...but i couldn't seem to find the answer...

sounds like the IAC Valve. Do a search for that or IAC cleaning and try cleaning it.

The mechanic probably mentioned the Idle Air Control Valve or IACV. That's what fsttyms1 mentioned above. These have a tendency to stick on the TLs and they can cause idle problems. But cleaning is often all they need. Replacing one would typically be overkill.

Sounds like the idle air control valve, could also be the EGR valve sticking, which is what happened on my car. Both items were replaced under warranty and no problems since.
FYI
