Sounds kinda slow, I have a similiar spec for my PC at home!
If you're going to use UNIX, I would go with a SUN box. OR if you want stay with Intel based PC, dual processors with at least 512MB of ram! Running Linux and apache!
My 2 cents!

Sun's are nice but overpriced.
Dual processors is useless on UBB as it threads like shit and won't take advantage of it. I agree more memory can't hurt.

Hey Snook I got a 833 p3 sitting at my desk brand new, I'll trade this for the wood dash kit that's for the cl-s. Hey wat da heck I'll also throw in a 128 sdram. if that will help this site stay up. This is all I do during work. For the past 4~5 dayz I've been browsing around other forums and they're all toatally dead. hey give me a call if your interested. 703-980-2378 aim

System specs don't sound too appealing.

Even my system at home is an AMD Thunderbird 900 with 256megs of ram and a 30 gig hd w/ IFITL 1.5mb/s dl and 256k's ul

What you really need is some content caching (caches static web objects/files) and load balancing. Have your ISP ask their Cisco account team about these solutions.

At my work, the test servers are 700+ mhz dual pentium III with 256MB ram at a minimum. Production servers are quad 700+ mhz with a 512MB ram configuration.

Adding more memory will usually help performance. Good luck and thanks for your dedication and hard work!

I agree that the specs don't seem very good (my laptop is much more powerful than that). Correct me if you're wrong, but it seems like you'll be taking a desktop computer and making it your server. This will work in most situations, but if you want this server to have a 95%+ uptime, you should look into an actual server machine. Then you can get some redundancy going (2nd power supply, 2nd NIC card, either Raid 5 or mirroring of HD's). I don't know what the budget is for this server, but if you want a solid machine, I would make sure the "server" is an actual server.

Just my 2 cents.

No, what you really need is a combination of Alteon Switches with a Cacheflow box!

Cisco Local Director sucks! So does the Arrowpoint which they acquired! j/k

As you can see, I work for Alteon!

Tim, although he's right, this solution is very expensive and you need multiple web servers to truly utilize the equipment.

More RAM, fast hard-disks (15K rpm) and a raid 5 solution with caching controller. I dont know how well the multiprocessor kernal is for UNIX runningon I386 hardware, but a second CPU would help (dual 833MHZ). If you're making money with this site, spend the money on a decent H/W solution: expect the hardware to run $15K plus SW and Service. I dont know if you used a "sniffer" on your last setup, but it would help to see what your bottleneck was (the network, mem, cpu, disk). You could be choked off at the single nic card, adding a 2nd card and using a DNS loadbalance could help.

I agree with what everyone has said, but a PIII 500 will do pretty good under normal circumstances. Considering this Forum gets used quite a bit the best alternative for you might be upgrading to the "database" version of UBBS. The other thing you have to watch out for is if the site is being hosted with other sites on the same server, because they will be pulling some of the resources as well.

Good Luck

Tim,

In general, the machine sounds okay, however I'd inquire about getting more RAM (at least 256MB). The "my desktop PC has more balls" argument shouldn't steer your decision. For what it's worth, my most powerful machine at home is my laptop (PIII 500). One of my servers at home (dual pII 233 /w 256 MB of RAM) hosted a 3 million request per day website with no difficulty at all. I'm not personally familiar with UBB, so I can't say for sure... but my guess is that it won't manage to consume a 600Mhz CPU with only 20 or so active users on the site at a time. One of the easiest ways to ensure performance though is to make sure you aren't swapping to disk... so you want to make sure you have more than enough RAM to cover each user instance of the application, plus the webserver, and the OS. I configure all of my production servers with 4GB of RAM as a standard. (Sun's pricing sucks. It ends up being cheaper to buy the machines full blown than to buy them stripped down and upgrade later. No time for that sort of screwing around in today's fast paced world) The OS will usually use large amounts of the available memory for caching, which will potentially improve performance, so you want to give it as breathing room as possible.

As for MySQL being a "high performance database"...we won't go there. ;-) It's fine for smaller applications, but I wouldn't count on it tolerating any serious abuse. If it could, Oracle wouldn't be out there charging so much money for their product. (How many TLs could THAT money buy? ;-) )

By the way guys, it sounds like Tim is going to be paying for the use of this machine, not buying it. Unless he is dealing with a relatively large hosting company, I doubt that they're offering up real "server class" x86 machines - i.e. HP LC2000r.

Are these guys going to be backing up the server, or will you have to perform backups of some sort on your own?

On the RAID argument, if you're willing to invest the extra money in a RAID system (to improve availability and performance), your best bet is to use RAID 0+1 (also called RAID 10). It's a bit more expensive than RAID 5, however performance is *much* better, and recovery is significantly more simple.

Just my $0.02.
