We have a 99TL in the shop.
Our first TL - not a five speed. It has a P0740 code (TCC system problem) and delayed shifting.
More info later.

These designs all look very similar - whether it's an Accord BAXA or an Odyssey BYBA. Honda's are a blend of automatic and manual transmission. They don't have any planetaries or bands. It's all gears, so there's not much to go wrong outside of hydraulics - but the parts are CRAZY expensive.
The reverse gear setup is VERY much like a manual. It has a shift fork that moves the reverse gear into position (the clunk you hear when you put it in reverse). In fact, on the shaft under the reverse gear are synchros - just like a manual.
No other manufacturer's transmissions look quite like a Honda. Toyota, Nissan, all of the domestics all use a planetary setup. Who knows, maybe this is why Honda auto's in some cases get better mileage than their manual alternatives (i.e. new Civic).
