Angry water leak under back seat

I'm pushing 40K miles on my 2002 TypeS and for the most part have been very happy with one exception: I have a water leak under the back seat.

I discovered the leak shortly after I bought the car (Nov 2001) while running the wires for my XM Satellite radio antenna under the back seat. I'm talking puddles of water directly under the back seat (the front part of the seat snaps in place so you can pop it up to check). There was no water in the foot wells, just under the seat.

During the first trip to the dealer they replaced the seat belts that had salt stains from the water leaching and 'sealed' the underside of the passenger compartment. I'm not exactly sure what 'sealed' meant, but after checking under the seat several times after that I 'assumed' they had fixed the problem.

I though the problem was resolved until late this past fall when I returned to my car to find condensation covering 3/4 of the windshield and the rear window inside the car. (It was raining in the morning on the way to work and clear and sunny when I left work). I had to wipe the inside of the windshield dry before I could see to drive.

During the second trip to the dealer (for this problem) they sent it to their 'water leak experts' who could not find a leak. Because I was unable to take the car into the dealer right away it was nice and dry under the seat so I'm sure they verified that the sunroof, doors and back window didn't leak.

My car has been at the dealer (third time for this problem) for almost a week and I haven't heard from them yet!?! I can handle driving the dealer's non-TypeS in its place but I miss my XM radio something fierce.

That all said, does anyone else out there have water leaking under their back seat? I find it hard to believe that mine would be the only one.

Signed,
Not a happy camper!

Wow, bummer deal. My 02 TLS has 34K and no such leaks. Maybe water kicked up from below? Or Door seal? Is it both sides?

i have this problem!!!!!!!! no one else seemed to have it but you. i think i figured it out and solved it though. hopefully i could help you. i have fully adjustable air shock susspension, and ever since that was installed i was getting horrible leaks. i finally figured the struts diddnt give it a water tight seal and the tires were spitting up water into the strut and then it was leaking down the behind the seats and back into the trunk. i was getting huge puddles in the trunk and all the seats were soaked underneath? do you have aftermarket struts or springs at all? take the back seats out and silcone where the strut bolts in... good luck. if this seems like it might be the problem. go all out with the silicone.

Wow that sucks. I was pissed when my old Z06 leaked behind the drivers seat b/c the crappy seals. Car only had like 12k miles on it so I can empathize if it's a factory defect.

their are 2 or 3 rubber plugs (they will have paint over them) under the seat cushion...they pop out really easy, i would make sure those are sealed tight, my fell out after i touched it lightely and you can see the ground directly under the hole...i was suprised about how easy the plugs popped out, and also that i was all that seperates the inside form the outsie

i have the same problem now. I just got it back from the shop, they had to take out the whole dashboard, i think some tube was clogged. But after a week of rain, and my car being parked in my driveway, There was a puddle on the front and back floor passenger side only. and the trunk, under the spare tire. I do have after market suspension. I noticed some on the passenger floor yesterday after it rain, but only in the back. I dont know what to do now.

I have this problem and there were 2 sources of water entry for my TL

1. the moonroof was tilted when it rained. Unfortunately my moon roof drain was clogged.
2. I put in clear tail lights and did not tighten the tail-light bolts so some water seeped in thru the trunk and into the rear seat foot well

Check them out, good luck
