warped rotors?

2002 tl-s 65,000 miles... just had tranny failure at 64000 miles, car really starting to bug me. its really weird, 90% of the time, the brakes are fine, but randomly on the highway or on a onramp off the highway, the car starts to shake especially the steering wheel almost furiously. i always try to duplicate the problem right after this occurs but can never duplicate it, it just goes back to stopping smoothly. this a sign of early warped rotors?

p.s. the car stops fine... if it ends up being warped, go to dealer and get replaced(free?, rosenthal acura) or go aftermarket?

Lightbulb Yes

I would say it's early signs of warped rotors.... Here's a rule of thumb... Never wash your car after you've been driving because the cold water on hot rotors = cracking/warping...

I would see if you can get them replaced or fixed for free first... If you can't, then get rotora slotted and satisfied pro ceramic pads and call it a day : o )

Water doesnt warp rotors. The term warped rotors doesnt mean the rotors them selves are warped. Its Actually prake pad material thats built up glazing the rotor in spots. not torquing wheels is one of the biggest cause of warping rotors

I just remembered my old thread about it and many people were saying that you should never hit your hot rotors with cold water or they will warp.

my stock rotors sucked and I'm more than happy with my new setup... quiet and little brake dust

That's good to know... I would just see if they can fix the oem one's for free or something and if not, I wouldn't purchase new oem one's if I could get the rotora and satisfied pro's for a better or comprable price

I have the rotora slotted and satisfied pro ceremic pads.

1) Don't bed them in by doing 120-0 in 4 seconds.
2) If your torque wrench happens to be broken, don't guess. Buy another.

Sincerely,
Someone who glazed his rotors

I think it stems from your driving habits. I have always ended up with warped rotors: Toyota MR2, Camaro, Accord, Diamante, Accord Coupe and now TL!

I have to agree with the driving habits. some drivers are just prone to riding the brakes, while others just brake hard, due to aggressive driving. If you fall into one of these classes, you may need aftermarket rotors. Be aware that aggressive braking can cause problems even with aftermarket rotors, that were made for aggressive braking.
Uneven heat causes the temper of the rotor material to change. Then the materials wear at different rates, causing high and low areas on the surface. As you continue to brake, the problem accelerates, as the higher spots see more friction and get even hotter. Can cold water on an extremely hot surface cause hardness changes? I believe so.

Yes that is good to know and I hope you're right. I just put on my irotors last week and the forcast calls for rain tomorrow. I also read a thread the thread saying that water on hot rotors will get them warped. I was worried about driving in the rain while in the break in period for my rotors and pads.

Think about it. If water warped rotors that easy every one would have that problem every time it rained. Like i said before rotors dont actually warp like the term suggests

from what i recall, the major issue of wraped rotors is not the the rotos are really hot on one side and really not on the other, but rather when you come to a complete stop, the pad and the rotor material will actually bond and casue a deformation....

p.s. correct me if im wrong... TL Jones, is riding the brake, pressing the break pedal very early and bring the car to a complete stop very smoothly, bec thats what i do(want to make the ride as smooth as possible), but anyways, hope thats not too bad
