Unhappy Ward's 10 Best Engines

Is the Nissan VQ V-6 engine really that great? I read their comments on both Nissan 3l VQ and Honda 3.2 V-6 engines. Reviews seem to be pretty subjective.

Here is what they have to say about Honda's 3.2 V-6 :

Honda/Acura 3.2L VTEC DOHC V-6

260 hp, 232 lb.-ft. (CL Type S)

+ Satisfying personal cruise missile.

– "Numbers" don’t jibe with the "feel."

the nissan is a great v-6. there is no doubting that just look at the numbers. another great engine is the bmw 6 cylinder. my step-dad has a 330ci and it is unbelievable. the engine is so smooth and powerful. also, one of my friends has a 2001 m4 convertible. i would be hard pressed to find a 6 cylinder more satisfying than that one. i am looking forward to seeing the next acura v-6 for the tl and cl. even though it will not be able to lay down performance like the m3 i would be willing to bet it will give the nissan v-6 a run for its money.

They are already idiots. The Honda/Acura engine is SOHC not DOHC.

All reviews are subjective. You have to make up your own mind about things by experiencing them yourself (test drive the cars).

Agreed, i don't know about you guys but i could not care less of what some fool named Ward thinks about my engines.

Who the hell made Ward's the be-all, end-all of engines. When Honda engineers designed the J-block did they say "Gee i hope WARD approves of thsi engine?" **** NO!!!

You are right Soundspeed. I didn't even notice their error with "DOHC". Either Ward is a bunch of idiots or they must get a big fat cheque from Nissan every year to name Nissan's VQ engine in theri top ten list year after year.

The 3.2 engine in the TL is pretty damn good in my books.

I realize they're wrong because they're talking about the CL-S. But didn't the NSX have a 3.2 DOHC?

this is what confuses me.

they say the vq engine is great and all, but they say the 3.2 honda engine "Numbers don't jibe with feel"

yet the vq engine, which is supposedly so much better in the i35, is much slower...yet, it "jibes" with the feel?

well, as i'm accelerating past an i35 in a type-s, i'll think to myself..."at least the i35 driver "feels" fast!"

LOL!

I agree. I saw in the mags that the 255 hp I35 does 0-60 in 7.0 secs. My god, if that's true then I can beat him just with an intake in my 225 hp TL.:p

Satisfying personal cruise missile

Satisfying personal cruise missile.

That's an awesome thing to say about the TL-S/CL-S "Satisfying personal cruise missile. " I love it!

I don't get you guys....when there's positive pub about our TLs you chime right in with glee....but when the shoe is turned around you'll become defensive.... do yourself a small favor and open up your minds to variety...go test drive the Max 6 sp or I35 and see how good the 3.5 acutally is...I have driven the car, the engine is very good....it has quicker trottle response than the TLs, it pulls with authority throughout the power band (flat not peeky), the torque delivery is amazing even at high speeds....it is every bit as buttery smooth as bmw's in line 6 and I thought I'd never say that...the Max just feels much lighter than our Tls giving the driver a feeling that he / she has nothing but engine and the power delivery will never stop.....our TLs feel heavy and lathergic by comparasion.....I belive that is the reason for the low scoring by the TLs 3.2....our car gives the feeling of being to heavy....test drive a 330I and you'll get the same feeling there that you get from the Max.

agreed...but there's a difference between "feeling" fast and "being" fast.

my friend's civic si with maxwell-house exhaust feels fast even though it probably doesn't break the 7sec barrier because it's loud and small.

the tl-s/cl-s IS fast even though it doesnt' feel it...but then again, i'd rather BE fast than "feel" fast.

Hey DEAN078 - The Max 6 sp is faster than all TL s and the 4 sp is
is comparable to the type S. The I35 was never meant to be faster but competitive....look out for the upcoming G35.

I love my TL but I don't wear blinders.

sorry buddy, but unless the 4spd auto in the max can have the car pulling 6.6sec or less to 60mph, it doesn't compare to the type-s.

the engine in the i35 is the same engine in the 6spd max. yet even though the type-s can pull faster times than the i35, wards is saying that the numbers don't "jibe" with the feel. but according to that, the i35's engine does? when we start talking about 6spds and all, we aren't tlaking about engines anymore, and i didn't realize that it this was "Wards 10 best Trannys"

you missed my point by like a mile, dude.

I agree with dean that there is no way a 4sp max can beat a type-S. Why can't you admit that? I can admit that the manual max can either tie or beat the type-S by a little. Stop living in your little dream world and wake up to reality.

BTW, they have the I35 doing 0-60 in 7.0 seconds.

grow up, man.

if you can't see the point, then shut up until you do instead of warping it around in your mind and saying you don't have blinders on because it's obvious you do.

Well the 95-99 Maxima engine (the one that made 190hp) was a great engine, quite frankly wonderful and to tell ya the truth it begun when Nissan gave the 3.0 DOHC in I think 1992 on the SE Maxima for the 190hp (SOHC had 160) but it was an old school engine, the new ones have aluminum parts etc.

The reason the I30 is not faster (0-60 in 7 flat is not slow) is because of a tranny that sucks power......

I think the 3.2 engine in the TL/CL is also a great engine....

I think what Ward means is a V-6 can do so much noramlly aspirated with all these horses....

You guys are right...I need to shut up until I get the point. I think I do... here goes...

THE REBADGED FAMILY SEDAN HONDA ACCORD HAS THE BEST ENGINE IN THE WORLD!! It also has a tranny that breaks every week (read your treads) but it is the best in the business...long live the REBADGED ACCORDS!!!.

Hey is that Nissan/ BMW/Audi/VW waiting in the wings to get engine, tranny and handling tips...my bad that's just a Civic with a VW roof antenna & side marker lights and oh yell M3 mirrors.

Now that I agree with you and see your point....I don't feel so bad.

I love my V6 in my TL
but I will admit I drove a 99 Max before --- the 3.0L VQ engines are VERRRRRY Sweeeet revving engines....

My grandmothers Villager has the 3rd gen VDEQ (i think its VDEQ???) something like taht, anyhow 3.0L max engine and I've always loved the way that thing revs -- it just begs to be pushed its a sweet engine

I think the strongest Nissan engine is the only "RB26DETT" in the R32, R33 and R34. It has more potential than the VQ series.
