My main reason for installing the light is because, on the SOHC VTEC engine, you can barely feel the VTEC engage as it is much less tell whether or not it disengages in between shifts.

The answer to your question is:
Vtec is always activated. It takes the power effect I believe at 4.3k rpms to red line. Below 4.3k it uses the save gas effect.

Vtec was design to give you sufficient power at low and high end. It does not increase the engine's design power. It gives you the power when needed at the same time it save the power(gas) when not needed. In other words it makes your engine as efficient as possible.
