How do you tell when your car was made using the VIN # and what number it is????

The last 6 digits of the VIN are the production #.

 

Correct. And the lower the number, (usually) the earlier it came off the assembly line. In theory, the first one of each model would have 000001 as the last six digits in the VIN. You will also find the manufacture date (month/year) on the tag found inside the door at the bottom sill. Mine was built in May 2001 (don't know the day), and I took possession of it on May 26th and my VIN is in the 014000s....

The only exception to this is cars destined for Canada, which start at 800000.

 

That cant be good for me. I picked up my car on May 12th.. but my VIN is 005418, does that mean my car sat somewhere for a long time? :wow:

I just checked... my car was built on 3/01 and i didnt pick it up till May 12th:wow:
So it sat around till I bought it.. weird, it only had like 8 miles on the ticker.

I had to get this one... at the time, it was the only black on black with navi in chicago.. and thats from like 5 dealers!!!
Either way im still happy! I just wonder what it was doing this WHOLE month before i got it.

just beware of your tranny. according to the research done by some of this site's members, our car that was built in Mar01 appears to have the highest probability of having a tranny problem. anyway, good luck & hope u are not the one.

 

Yes remind me to drive my car very slow, and be scared to drive it cuz i am afraid of my tranny.

 

I just picked my TL S on Saturday and the VIN ends in 52269. The door sticker says it was manufactured in 12/01 (so it sat 2+ months). It also must have been one of the last 2002's made since the '03s are already on the lot.

Their loss, your gain! If it's been good to you, don't worry about those tiny details. Unless it was outside in the Chicago winter and showed signs of paint trouble, 8 miles is 8 miles...
I just bought a new 02 TLS last week with a VIN in the 62,XXX. It was built 1-02. I think it was probably one of the last 02s built.

P.S. I love that glazed over chimp look you chose as your icon... I can't help but laugh everytime I see it. I swear I've seen people with that clueless look... Is that the look people give you when they see you blow by them on the road? lol

my VIN is 007079 and I bought mine April 12 Oh well...I always "enjoy" my car to the max...Just ask Ray...he hears it all the time

 

Bought mine on May 5th vin #: 10599. No problems yet.

I just looked at my VIN. It's 001055. :wow: Should I be worried about my tranny too? It's been really well behaved... so far...

 

Mine's in the 500s and so far no problems with 17,000miles. I was thinking about keeping this one for awhile, but I'm kind of scared to keep it past the warranty.
