video of the knock i have
hey everyone,
i made a video of the knock/tick that im getting from the engine, i am holding my iphone over the top of the engine and it had been running for about 5 minutes from dead cold
if anyone can give a hand in determining what this is that would be great
thanks
Mike

The frequency of the knocking leads me to believe it's bottom end. Here's why, the noise seems like it's a slower knocking noise going with the crank. An upper end noise should go twice as fast. (Cams turn twice as fast as the crank). I could be wrong.
If it were valves the noise should be higher pitch, while bottom end noise is lower pitched and has a deeper sound, most of the time.
It's up to you to decide if it's upper or lower end noise, from there you can decide where to start disassembling for diagnosis.
An automotive stethoscope is good to help narrow where the noise is originating.

well met up with a friend who is an engine builder/machinist and we narrowed the ticking down to the center cyl on the front (i believe its cyl #4)
when we unplugged the coil it was almost 100% gone and when plugged back in it came back, so that says that its not valves because it would do it no matter what if it was.
and with the way it sounded and wasnt the same through cold or warm as it almost disappears when its warm we dont think its rod bearings at all.
so we were looking at piston slap, well the previous owner drove for who knows how long with a dead coil in this cylinder, so we have concluded that it is piston slap because of being washed out with fuel. we used his labroscope to view in the cyl and there was some scoring on the side of the cyl wall
my next step is to verify the oil pressure and compression of the cyl to see if its good or not
just thought i would share this update
